In 1972, Becker made his feature debut as co-director and co-producer (with Souter Harris) with "The Ragman's Daughter", a superb, if somewhat forgotten, low-budget romance set in England and featuring strong performances from Victoria Tennant and Simon Rouse.
Becker followed with yet another Wambaugh adaptation, "The Black Marble" (1980), a somewhat less successful feature about the growing romance between a female cop and her troubled partner.
Becker bounced back with the police thriller-cum-romance "Sea of Love" (1989) which rejuvenated the ailing careers of stars Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin.

 Salon Entertainment | "Mercury Rising"
Becker's last two movies, "Malice" and "City Hall," were solid, workmanlike entertainments with plenty of good acting to keep them going.
Becker can't even work up the energy to be a good hack here.
He barely suggests a hint of romance between Willis and the woman (Kim Dickens) he turns to for help, and the action carnage, including a man's face being shredded by flying glass, is a transparent sop tossed to the cretin element in the audience.

The Onion Field Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Becker's quiet, raspy commentary betrays the reverence he still feels for this true-crime drama and the surprise that it was so well-received.
Becker's commentary is decent, but the best extra on this disc is a made-for-DVD documentary, "Ring of Truth," which runs 20 minutes and features interviews with Wambaugh, Becker, Danson, Savage, and Woods.
Interspersed among their recollections are clips from the movie and some fascinating then/now footage and photos to show how little the area had changed and how closely the filmmakers came in their fictionalized version.

 Directors: Harold Becker
arold Becker's identity is so aligned with the world of Joseph Wambaugh that it is easy to miss the truly defining characteristic of his career: whether by accident or design, Becker was there at the creation for many actors who went on to at least some measure of stardom.
Becker brings an almost documentary quality to some of his films, but the attempt at kitchen sink subject matter in Daughter and strict The Wrong Man-style realism of Onion is not carried through to the the often preposterous tales he tells in later films.
He seems drawn loosely to tales of men in crisis; young or old, his heroes are poised at some crucial moment of transition that will change the rest of their lives.

Talented filmmaker who began his career in still photography, moved into TV commercials and garnered praise for a number of short documentaries.
Becker made a superb, if overlooked debut feature with "The Ragman's Daughter" (1972), shot in Britain, and gained attention with a cool, gripping adaptation of Joseph Wambaugh's "The Onion Field" (1979).
Becker's command of atmosphere and suspense is evident in such varied films as the tense cadet drama, "Taps" (1981), the intelligent juvenile romance, "Vision Quest" (1985) and the charged New York cop thriller, "Sea of Love" (1989)....

Our filmmaker-in-residence for the fall 2005 semester is director/producer Harold Becker.  Becker began his career as a designer and stills photographer after studying art at the prestigious Pratt Institute in New York City.  He made the transition into moving pictures when he began directing TV commercials and short films, including the award-winning Ivanhoe Donaldson.
Other credits include The Black Marble (1980), Vision Quest (1985), The Boost (1988), Mercury Rising (1998), and Domestic Disturbance (2001), a chilling tale of a man whose secret life and vicious past is revealed by a frightened stepson and his anxious father (with John Travolta and Vince Vaughn).
Becker's ability to bring gritty realistic storytelling and a documentary style to more escapist films suited to a mainstream audience has given him a successful and lasting career.  He is currently filming a remake of the classic jewel heist movie Rififi starring Al Pacino.

After a career slump that plagued him through most of the 1980s, Al Pacino made a stellar comeback in this taut 1989 thriller, playing a weary New York police detective who falls in love with the woman (Ellen Barkin) who is the prime suspect in the murder case he's investigating.
Expertly written by Richard Price and directed by Harold Becker, the story is designed to keep its central characters (and the viewer) in a state of constant suspicion and arousal--an emotional combination that sends dangerous sparks flying between Pacino and Barkin.
