Morse taught briefly at Harvard before entering military service for the period of World War I. For the duration of the war he served as a private in the U.S. Army in France and for his outstanding work in the Ambulance Corps he was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star.
Morse theory is important in the field of global analysis which is the study of ordinary and partial differential equations from a global or topological point of view.
Morse's major works include Calculus of variations in the large (1934), Functional topology and abstract variational theory (1938), Topological methods in the theory of functions of a complex variable (1947) and Lectures on analysis in the large (1947).

Drake's sons Marston E. and James H. Drake entered the firm in the teens, and by the time of the senior Drake's death the firm on West 40th Street was a mecca for bookmen in the New York area.
The Drake brothers continued in the tradition of their father, but upon the retirement of Marston ("the Colonel") and death in 1965 of Jim the entire stock of the firm and its business records were acquired by the Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas.
This collection of autograph letters and autographs was assembled by the firm of James F. Drake, Inc. in the 1930s for sale by that rare-book firm; it was acquired by the Humanities Research Center upon the Ransom Center's acquisition of Drake's stock in the 1965.
