Harold Hitz Burton (June 22, 1888 - October 28, 1964) was an American Senator and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
Burton served in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1929 and was elected Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio in 1935, running as a Republican.
Burton resigned from the Senate when he was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1945 by later President Truman, to succeed Justice Owen J. Roberts.

Harold Hitz Burton was born into a Unitarian and Republican family in Jamaica Plain, Boston, the son of a civil engineering professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Young Harold lived with his mother in Switzerland, but she died when he was seven years old, and he returned to Massachusetts.
Burton and his wife, childhood friend Selma Florence Smith, settled happily in Ohio, raising four children in the state that was to elect and reelect him, first as Mayor of Cleveland and later as a United States Senator.

Though not a prolific opinion writer, Burton saved most of the drafts of the various stages of his opinions along with comments in memoranda or actual annotations by his colleagues on the Court on their copies of opinions which they returned to him.
Burton generally retained files on an average of ten to fifteen cases per term, usually the ones in which he wrote a majority, dissenting, or concurring opinion.
Upon retiring from the Court in 1958, Burton frequently sat on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, where he was active until his health failed in 1962.
