Harold Loeffelmacher was born in 1905 on a farm in Mollet county near Fort Ridgely of frontier days.
Loeffelmacher had seven buses in his lifetime, which he used to travel 90,000 miles annually from Texas to Canada, and play 335 dates a year.
Harold recalled that when he first started, he was once stranded in Yankton, South Dakota, and had to wire home to his brother for $10 to get back to New Ulm.

In 1988, Harold Loeffelmacher, leader of one of the most popular polka bands in North America, died in his hometown of New Ulm, Minnesota at the age of 82.
Loeffelmacher led the Six Fat Dutchmen for more than 50 years, founding the group in the 1930's.

A native of Algona, Iowa, he served in the United States Navy during World War II after graudation from Algona High School.
His entertainment career began when he worked for several local bands such as Harold Loeffelmacher and his Six Fat Dutchmen Old-Time Band when he was discovered by Lawrence Welk in 1951.
During his tenure on the show, in addition to his playing the saxophone, he sang not just solos but also in duets, performed in comedy sketches, dances, and also played Santa Claus for many years on the Christmas shows.

The Schmitzes came to New Ulm to visit old friend Geneva Loeffelmacher, widow of former New Ulm polka band leader Harold Loeffelmacher.

Another major school is the Polish-style polka, often identified with Chicago, which employs accordion, concertina, bass, drums, and trumpets.
Harold Loeffelmacher put together his band in New Ulm in 1932 and after many decades of tireless touring (including a 26 year run at the Nebraska State Fair) he was inducted into the International Polka Hall of Fame in 1975.
He and the Six Fat Dutchmen made numerous appearances on the Lawrence Welk show and were voted the “No. 1 Polka Band” seven years running by the National Ballroom operators.
