Harold Stanley | 20th Century American Leaders Database
Having made a name for himself at JP Morgan prior to the Banking Act of 1933, Stanley became a leader in the newly independent investment banking industry.
Under Stanley's leadership, his company gained a strong position in securities offerings, especially in the bond market.
Stanley, however, is personally known for his stern defense of the "old-guard" investment banking industry during the 1930s and 1940s when the government tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to prove that the industry was anti-competitive.

Well did Harold Stanley know when he sat down in the witness chair that soon he would be back in the same chair when the committee shifted its topic from "Investment banking" to allied "competitive bidding." Well did Pete Nehemkis know that Mr.
Stanley was the leader of the conservative Wall Street group (including such firms as Kuhn, Loeb, Lee Higginson, First Boston) which has frigidly rejected competition.
Harold Stanley persisted, for well he knew that when TNEC gets into competitive bidding, such insurgents as Cyrus Eaton and Alleghany Corp.'s unruly Bob Young may get the first say, put Morgan Stanley and Co. on the defensive with tail-end statements in news stories.

 Excite -
In investment banking, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter is generally considered one of the top two banks in the world (along with Goldman Sachs), with strong franchises in high-margin businesses such as mergers and acquisitions advisory and equity underwriting.
Schieffelin, a 14-year Morgan Stanley employee and principal in the company's institutional equity unit, had complained in 1998 that Morgan Stanley had repeatedly denied her promotion because she was a woman.
Morgan Stanley Dean Witter's interviews are, according to current employees, "quite formal, even for the investment banking industry." Technical questions are common; one business school student interviewing for a trading job reports that for his final round he was asked to sit in a chair while a senior director peppered him with macroeconomic questions.

However, by this time Stanley was too desperately ill to provide me the specific information I needed before I had any chance to accomplish anything by contacting Byus, so he simply sent me what he had prepared a few weeks earlier, while he was still able.
