He was created the 1st Baron Harmsworth of Egham in the County of Surrey in 1939.

Harold Sidney Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Rothermere (1868 - 1940) was a highly successful British newspaper proprietor, owner of Associated Newspapers.
Harmsworth founded the Glasgow Daily Record, and the Sunday Pictorial, but his greatest success came with the Daily Mirror, which had a circulation of three million by 1922.
Rothermere strongly supported revision of the Treaty of Trianon in favour of Hungary, to the extent that he was offered the Hungarian Crown in 1927.

Harmsworth's father, Harold Sydney Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Rothermere, had been the financial wizard behind the creation of the Daily Mail in partnership with his brother Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe.
Harmsworth ran the businesses with sufficient skill that they remain firmly under family control today, majority ownership being voted by his grandson, the 4th Viscount Rothermere, and a significant minority by Vyvyan Harmsworth, the 2nd Viscount's son by his third marriage.
