Harpalus summoned up his courage (for he was still young enough to convince himself he could extricate himself from any dilemma) and took the pipe called Troll Catcher and went to the valley.
Harpalus was a clever lad, a very clever lad, and he knew his boon did not include a safe departure with the Golden Apples, should the troll manage to steal them from under the eyes of the gods.
But after hearing Harpalus ask many penetrating questions about the rich fields and deep mines and busy rivers, he realized that this would be a better son-in-law that some blustering warrior who thought of nothing but wine and boars, or a fleet athlete with the brains of a bird.

The indignation of Greeks, as well as barbarians, was now loud against Harpalus: among.qthers, Theopompus the historian wrote a letter of complaint to Alexander, some extracts from which are still preserved.
Collecting together all the treasures which he could, amounting to a sum of 5000 talents, and assembling a body of 6000 mercenaries, he hastened to the coast of Asia, and from thence crossed over to Attica.

Harpalus, son of Machatas, was possibly the son of one of Philip II’s wives (Athenaeus 13.557c).
The reason for his flight is not known: suggested explanations have included that he was, in fact, on a spying mission; that he had been replaced as treasurer; or, more feasibly, that he was alarmed by Alexander’s illness at Tarsus, or that he did not think that Alexander could defeat Darius.
It is also possible that the flight in some way involved Alexander’s brother-in-law and uncle, Alexander of Epirus for, while Harpalus stayed in Greece, Tauriscus travelled to the Epirote king in Italy, where he died.

 Demosthenes by Plutarch
It was not long after that Harpalus fled from Alexander, and came to Athens out of Asia; knowing himself guilty of many misdeeds into which his love of luxury had led him, and fearing the king, who was now grown terrible even to his best friends.
But some few days after, as they were taking an account of the treasure, Harpalus, perceiving how much he was pleased with a cup of Persian manufacture, and how curiously he surveyed the sculpture and fashion of it, desired him to poise it in his hand, and consider the weight of the gold.
Harpalus, it seems, was a person of singular skill to discern a man's covetousness by the air of his countenance, and the look and movements of his eyes.

Some in antiquity called him a "rustic Demosthenes." But Dionysius of Halicarnassus rated him as one of the best orators who sought to emulate Demosthenes, and his reputation was high enough to ensure that three out of several dozen speeches attributed to him were preserved.
The Harpalus incident, though one of the more ignominious episodes in the city's history, is nevertheless important for our understanding of Athenian politics in the reign of Alexander the Great, and Dinarchus' speeches are thus a vital source of information for this period of Greek history.
5.13) that he took Harpalus' money as a loan for the Theoric Fund, but rejects the idea that it was taken to "help support a proposed revolt against Alexander" (65-72), while admitting his argument is "of course speculation." He also makes the interesting suggestion that Harpalus arrived not with 700, but only 450 talents.

He continued to play a prominent role in Athens after the death of Alexander, and although he was fined for his part in the Harpalus affair (324), he was called on again to negotiate a settlement with Antipater after Athens’ defeat in the Lamian war (322).
Most notable are his decisive victory with On the Crown(330 BC) and his defeat and subsequent exile in the rather shadowy Harpalus affair (324-323 BC), from which no speech of his survives.
The last years of his life, however, resulted in notable defeats, first in the Harpalus affair, and then in his final days when he was condemned to death (at the instigation of pro-Macedonian forces) and committed suicide.

"Blackwell offers a meticulous study of the Harpalus affair in order to analyze the limits of the Macedonians' ability to control Greece.
He shows that in the continuing absence of Alexander in the East, those who claimed to speak for the king had increasing difficulty in exercising authority, in part because of their competition with one another.
The book is an important answer both to historians who see a constitution in the Macedonian state and to those who think that the state was merely a projection of Alexander's 'power.' On Blackwell's showing, Athens in the Harpalus affair exposed both Macedonian authority and Macedonian power as fluid, subject to interpretation, and finally ineffective."
