The American Harpy Eagle, Harpia harpyja, is a neotropical eagle, often ambiguously called the Harpy Eagle.
Harpia harpyja is on the IUCN red list of endangered species.
The Harpy Eagle is arguably the bulkiest eagle still living, and the Philippine Eagle is the only living eagle to surpass it in size.

Wether the Harpy Eagle maintains a breeding popuplation in Belize remains undecided but on 5 February 2000, Rick Taylor found a Harpy Eagle, Harpia harpyja, perched along the road about 2 miles north of Caracol in the Maya Mountains of western Belize, the first authenticated record for the country since 1958.
Kevin Loughlin rearranged the itinerary of a tour he was leading to Belize to try to relocate the Harpy and, amazingly, succeeded.
Once present in lowland Neotropical forests ranging from southern Mexico to northern Argentina, Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) populations have been severely reduced throughout much of their range due to forest fragmentation and indiscriminate hunting by humans.

Ecotourism, if carefully controlled, can serve as an important tool to preserve the eagles by controlling illegal hunting, removal of chicks, nests destruction, uncontrolled logging, etc. and can help to turn local people and the public opinion into the conservation of wildlife by approaching people to this species and its natural habitat.

For my dissertation research, I am assessing genetic diversity across a geographic gradient within harpy eagles (Harpia harpyja), a threatened neotropical species, and comparing the extent of genetic diversity found to that seen in the Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), an Old World species of large eagle also threatened by habitat loss.
Genetic diversity within and between populations of each species will be addressed by analyzing both mitochondrial D-loop and nuclear microsatellite DNA for both avian species.
