A harpsichord concerto is a concerto for harpsichord and orchestra.
In the Baroque period, when the harpsichord was a common instrument, several concertos were written for it (Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a number of examples), though it was never as popular as the violin or other string or wind instruments.
With the rise of the piano in the Classical period, the harpsichord fell out of use, and nothing was written for it by major composers through the Romantic era.

Harpsichord   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A harpsichord is the general term for a family of European keyboard instruments, including the large instrument nowadays called a harpsichord, but also the smaller virginals, the muselar virginals and the spinet.
The harpsichord family is thought to have originated when a keyboard was affixed to the end of a psaltery, providing a mechanical means to pluck the strings.
The 18th century French harpsichord is often considered one of the pinnacles of harpsichord design, and it is widely adopted as a model for the construction of modern instruments.

Concertos began to be written for the harpsichord in the baroque period (17th-18th century), when it was a very common instrument, but though Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a number, it was never as popular as string or wind instruments in the concerto role, probably due to its relative lack of volume when in an orchestra.
In this context, harpsichords were more usually employed as continuo instruments, playing a harmonised bass part in nearly all orchestral music, and often played by the director of the orchestra.
With the revival of the harpsichord in the 20th century, harpsichordists commissioned new pieces for the new 'revival' instrument: Wanda Landowska commissioned concerti from Francis Poulenc and Manuel de Falla.

I know that the harpsichord part is probably very difficult if not impossible due to the speed of the notes and having two notes to one hand at many places.
When I read that you thought the harpsichord part might be impossible to play, I wondered to myself, "well, if you realise the part might be impossible to play, why would you want to write it that way?" When in doubt, be conservative.
The reason for that is that those guys discovered early on that when the cello and bass parts are separate and too independent, the result is a muddy mess in the bass register.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Glossary - Concerto
A concerto for piano and orchestra is called a piano concerto, a concerto for violin and orchestra is called a violin concerto, and so forth.
The solo concerto seems to be one of those forms that has an intrinsic genius, offering drama, excitement, the persuasiveness of the individual voice, the power of massed forces — whether in opposition to or in support of the individual voice — and the chance to exploit and exhibit great individual accomplishments.
The concerto repertoire for cello probably comes in third behind that of piano and violin for quantity and quality, but Mozart alone wrote four French horn concertos, two flute concertos, a concerto for violin and viola, one for flute and harp, and concertos for clarinet, oboe, and bassoon.

The harpsichord gradually becomes the predominating solo instrument by the end of the first movement, effectively making this the first harpsichord concerto.
The harpsichord is given a cadenza at the end of the first movement, unusual for both its length and the fact that it continues the musical narrative instead of interrupting it.

Having said that, the harpsichord's tone is very different from the piano - not surprisingly, its effect is not unlike that of a guitar, capable of great intensity yet also of quite meditation.
There is the elegant humour of BWV 1055, and there is the serious nobility of BWV 1056, where the harpsichord quietly meditates on one of Bach's most divine melodies in the slow movement, while the accompanying strings gently pizzicato their way to aural heaven.

Several years ago, I was invited by Charles and Diana Carey to compose a work for harpsichord and chamber orchestra to be performed by the Northwest Chamber Orchestra in September 2002.
For one, I have always been an admirer of the literature for harpsichord, had studied some of the music from the Baroque period quite thoroughly, and have played a bit of that music myself.
Secondly, I knew that the modern day harpsichord was capable of a fuller, more robust sound than was available in "period" instruments and might make a handsome partner to a modern chamber orchestra.

While Johann Sebastian Bach is credited with many harpsichord concertos, it should be noted that most of these works are arrangements of works for other instruments, often by other composers.
The Harpsichord Concerto No. 2, arranged in 1738 or 1739 and scored for the usual ensemble of soloist, strings, and basso continuo, is almost certainly derived from a concerto -- now lost -- for oboe or oboe d'amore and orchestra in F major, possibly composed by Bach during his tenure in Cöthen two decades earlier.
The concerto opens with the same kind of lengthy da capo Allegro movement that begins the Violin Concerto in E major and a handful of the Brandenburg Concertos (a kind of allegro that would have been rather old-fashioned by the late 1730s and early 1740s).

Many recording engineers and studios will record a harpsichord concerto one session and a piano concerto the next; in both cases there is a keyboard soloist set against the orchestral background.

But once again the harpsichord is generally relegated to the rear of the sound spectrum, the result being an almost solo violin with a faint tinkling in the background.

Classical Net Review - Bach - Harpsichord Concerti
Bach, as far as I know, is the first composer to write a concerto for harpsichord.
Bach arranged all his harpsichord concerti from ones for so-called "melody" instruments – usually violin or oboe – mostly his own concerti, but in one case a Vivaldi concerto for four violins.
One can also consider his earliest concerted work highlighting the harpsichord – the fifth Brandenburg – as a harpsichord concerto, and it must have astonished its first hearers, as the keyboard gradually rises out of the orchestra and eventually monopolizes the musical interest – sort of like watching a geriatric suddenly bust a move.
