The district of Harpurhey was named in the early 14th century after William Harpour who enclosed some 80 acres of land that were formerly part of the Forest of Blackley.
Harpurhey, along with Crumpsall and Blackley were to become areas that specialised in dyeing and bleaching, and the Andrews Dyeworks came to dominate the geographic and economic affairs of the district.

 Samuel Bamford - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He was the author of several widely popular poems (principally in the Lancashire dialect) showing sympathy with the conditions of his class, and his Passages in the Life of a Radical (1840—1844) is an authoritative history of the condition of the working classes in the years succeeding the battle of Waterloo.
He died at Harpurhey on the 13th of April 1872, and was given a public funeral, attended by thousands.
A memorial obelisk to Sam Bamford stands hidden and neglected, among young trees in the graveyard of Middleton Parish Church.

John Prescott, the deputy prime minister, has been invited to visit Harpurhey, an area of north Manchester which was named last week as the most deprived neighbourhood in England.
The Oxford study highlighted the fact that 55% of Harpurhey's residents were in poor health and that a third did not own their homes.
Harpurhey is barely three miles from Manchester's booming centre but has yet to reap the economic rewards.

Proceeding northwards from Pleasant Street you came immediatley to the lodge gates of Harpurhey Cottage, and caught a glimpse of the loveley old world garden with greenhouses running down one side of it.
I believe at one time it belonged to Harpurhey Hall, which I am told, extended down Oak Bank to the road where the gates were, with this lodge at the entrance.
Harpurhey is now a big town, but my mind still dwells fondly on it as a little suburban village.

Harpurhey Neighbourhood Project on Carisbrook Street, just opposite the old Conran Street Market houses organisations such as P4i (Project for Inclusion) and Landridge House Day Care Centre for people with learning difficulties.
Drop-in means just that - you can drop in at any time during a session and stay for as long as you want or need to (although staff do have work to do outside drop-in so please be prompt in leaving unless they have agreed that you can stay beyond the end of a session).
You don't need to book in advance or let us know if you won't be coming although you may have to wait for a computer to become available if a session is busy - but you can always have a brew and a chat while you're waiting.

The work seemed never ending in 2002 and 2003, as the church building was re-roofed, the worship hall was redecorated, and the sports hall was completely refurbished.
