The later model Harriers are easily distinguished by their extended wingspan, the wings extending beyond the outrigger wheels that are at the wingtips of the earlier versions (including Kestrel prototypes and the Sea Harrier).
The Sea Harrier, which is based on the GR3, was important in the British victory in the Falklands War.

The Harrier GR5, GR7, GR7A, GR9 and GR9A are all Royal Air Force variants of the BAE Systems/Boeing Harrier II.
The primary air-to-air missile (AAM) of the Harrier is the AIM-9 Sidewinder using its infrared homing device (the combination of Harrier and Sidewinder proved effective against Argentinian Mirages in the Falklands conflict), but does not carry the medium range AIM-120 AMRAAM missile.
With the retirement of the Sea Harrier it has been suggested that its Blue Vixen radar could be transferred to the GR9 fleet however the Ministry of Defence has rejected this as risky and too expensive.

The AV-8B Harrier II, is a second generation, vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) light-attack jet aircraft utilized by the United States Marine Corps, Royal Air Force, Spanish Armada[?] and Italian navy[?].
Each carried 24 Harriers, about four times their normal complement of fixed wing aircraft, and tried out the long dormant secondary purpose of the LHD's and LHA's, that of a small aircraft carrier, or sea control ship.
Two detatchments from RAF Cottesmore[?] were sent to the region, with one known to have been based at the al Jaber[?] airbase in Kuwait, and the other at a so far undisclosed location.

The British Aerospace Harrier is used by the RAF in the close air support role.
The first Harriers entered RAF service in 1969, making the RAF the first in the world to use its revolutionary vertical take-off and landing abilities which allow the aircraft to fly in and out of areas close to the battlefield that would normally be off-limits to conventional aircraft such as the Tornado.
The current versions of the Harrier are the pilot-only GR7 (which is being upgraded with more powerful engines and electronic systems to become the GR9) and the two-seat T10 which, when not used as a training aircraft, can also be used in combat.

The marking are for a Harrier of 4 sqn, RAF cottesmore.
Harrier's get very dirty on the lower rear fuselage, so I applied a nice bit of fl wash in this area to try and capture the look of the real aircraft.
The aircraft is carrying a weapons load out, seen on RAF Harriers that took part in the recent Gulf war.

The Sea Harrier is an excellent fighting machine and it's good that its newer version is being flown by UK air forces.
The Harrier GR7 / 9's are in the main ground attack aircraft, with very limited air-to-air capability, unlike the old Sea Harrier which was fully air-to-air functional.
The Sea Harrier is certainly a loss to the Royal Navy, and a very short sighted political move since its full time replacement is some 5 years away even if it's ever delivered.

AN RAF Harrier jump jet fitted with a sophisticated laser-targeting system arrived in the Gulf yesterday, considerably increasing Britain's military capability in the region.
The modification was rushed through late last year after it became apparent that RAF Harrier bombers already embarked on Royal Navy carriers could be severely limited in the event of air attacks on Iraq.
