The Harrier II is an extensively modified version of the first generation Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR Mk.1/Mk.3 series which first flew in December, 1967.
With the retirement of the Sea Harrier it has been suggested that its Blue Vixen radar could be transferred to the GR9 fleet however the Ministry of Defence has rejected this as risky and too expensive, Defence Minister Adam Ingram estimated the cost would be in excess of £600m.
The Harrier T10 is the original two seat training variant of the second generation RAF Harrier.

The Harrier II is a second generation, vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) light-attack jet aircraft used by the United States Marine Corps, Royal Air Force, Spanish Armada and Italian navy.
Each carried 24 Harriers, about four times their normal complement of fixed wing aircraft, and tried out the long dormant secondary purpose of the LHDs and LHAs, that of a small aircraft carrier, or sea control ship.
Two detachments from RAF Cottesmore were sent to the region, with one known to have been based at the al Jaber airbase in Kuwait, and the other at an undisclosed location.

The MoD stated that the planned withdrawal of the Sea Harrier reflects certain limitations in its capabilities, and the introduction later in the decade of the new Type 45 destroyer which boasts a "very capable area air defence system" (the Type 45 will be equipped with ASTER and is due in service during 2007).
The Harrier GR9/9a programme is basically the Harrier GR7 Integrated Weapons Programme (IWP) which brings together a number of discrete weapon-system enhancement projects and forms the crux of bringing the GR9 and T Mk12 aircraft into service.
To allow the Mk107 to be fitted to the Harrier GR7, a number of airframe and systems modifications are required and it is planned to carry out these and then install the Mk107 during the Harrier GR9 Programme.
