Harriet Taylor Mill (1807 –; 1858), married J.
Harriet held more radical views than J. Mill, believing that women should be educated and encouraged to enter public life and to pursue careers, while J.S. Mill believed that the removal of legal and educational barriers to women's independence would accomplish equality between the sexes, by granting women independence within marriages.
Harriet Taylor Mill died in Avignon after developing severe lung congestion, on November 3rd 1858.

Taylor Mill seems to be pushing us in the direction of recognition of the importance of this total unity when she insists, as she did in the passage I have just quoted, on making a distinction between "ideal" and "material" resemblance.

Distancing herself ever so slightly from their American style of public discourse, Taylor nevertheless endorsed the conventions' spirit and highlighted the contradiction between American democratic values and the exclusion of women from the "inalienable rights" of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Taylor concluded that "physical force" explained women's subjection to men.
On the 13th of February 1851, a petition of women, agreed to by a public meeting at Sheffield, and claiming the elective franchise, was presented to the House of Lords by the Earl of Carlisle.
