The differences between the polls' results, said Humphrey Taylor, the chairman of the Harris Interactive's Harris Poll, are to some degree due to the inclusion of people who don't have land line phones and so are ignored by traditional telephone polling.
Harris also polled more than 3,800 likely voters in the crucial swing states of Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania using the online method, and found that Senator Kerry led President Bush in all three.
Although Harris' Taylor dislikes the commonly-used phrase "margin of error" to denote the sampling error of a particular poll, the telephone survey comes with a sampling error of plus or minus 2.5 percent while the online poll has a plus or minus range of 2.8 percent.
