Harrisburg was founded before 1825 on the east shore of the Buffalo Bayou in present-day Harris County, Texas, on land belonging to John Richardson Harris.
After the Texas Revolution ended, the city of Houston was founded just north of Harrisburg and was named county seat of Harrisburg (later shortened to Harris) County and capital of the Republic of Texas.
Harrisburg remained an important rail town until a fire in the 1870s destroyed the rail yards, which were rebuilt in Houston.

 Texas Railroad Sesquicentennial - History of the BBB&C
The Republic of Texas granted four charters to build railroads, the first one in 1836, less than ten years after the first public railroad in the United States was chartered.
It was to run from Harrisburg, on Buffalo Bayou, to the Brazos River at Richmond, a rich agricultural area.
In 1885 the GH&SA was leased to the Southern Pacific.

Meanwhile, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company reached Denison from the north on December 24, 1872, and with the completion of the Houston and Texas Central to that point the following year, the Texas railroad system was finally connected to the nationwide network.
