By 1811, Harrison county had 6 townships: Exeter in the south; The center portion containing the 2 townships of Harrison (west) and Franklin (east); and the northern area was divided into the 3 townships of Washington, Madison and Driftwood townships.
Washington township was formed in the southwestern part of Harrison county, and given the same name as the earlier, no longer existing, township.
