Dillard later met Owens, who presented him with his first pair of running shoes.
An outstanding starter, Dillard was virtually unbeatable indoors, winning the AAU 60-yard hurdles seven years in a row from 1947 through 1953 and again in 1955.

Harrison Dillard began hurdling at the age of eight, running in an alley and using the springs from abandoned car seats as barriers.
However, in the final of the 110m hurdles at the U.S. Olympic trials, he lost his stride and failed to finish.
The usually calm Dillard leaped for joy and exclaimed, "Good things come to those who wait." Dillard won another gold medal in the relay to bring his career total to four.

They called him "Bones" because of his spindly (5-10, 152 pounds) size but Harrison Dillard was fast, whether sprinting or running the hurdles.
He is still the only man to ever win Olympic gold medals in both the sprints (100 meters, 1948) and high hurdles (1952).
A graduate of East Tech High School in Cleveland, Ohio (the same school that also produced Hall of Famers Dave Albritton and Jesse Owens), Dillard was inspired by Owens and went to little Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
