Harrison Hagan "Jack" Schmitt, born July 3, 1935, in Santa Rita, New Mexico, is a geologist, astronaut and former U.S. senator.
Harrison Schmitt stands before the flag, lunar rover and lunar lander in the splendor of the Taurus-Littrow valley.
Because Schmitt was the only geologist in the astronaut corps and, as well, had spent considerable time becoming proficient in the CSM and LM systems, it came as no surprise when, in March 1970, he became the first of the scientist-astronauts to receive a crew assignment.

7.30 Report - 10/07/2002: Ageing astronaut looks to moon mining
HARRISON SCHMITT: Well, if the investment started today, reasonable in some of the early businesses that would use fusion technology spin-off that is related to this project, then I think within 10 or 15 years we'd be back on the moon producing the energy resources of the moon for use here on earth.
HARRISON SCHMITT: I'm talking about mining the upper three metres or so of the debris layer that covers the moon, extracting the light isotope of helium - it's called helium three - that is a nearly ideal fuel for fusion power reactors.
HARRISON SCHMITT: Well it turns out Â… I think if I had a chance to talk with most of these people, I could convince them that it's not assailing the environment in any significant way at all.

According to Schmitt, "the primary argument against this hypothesis is found in the sampling sites for Apollo and lunar meteorite samples of impact-created glass for which formation ages have been determined.
Schmitt also suggests that there is evidence for and reason to believe that Mars had both early (older than 4.2 billion years) and late (younger than 3.8 billion years) oceans due to separate periods of intense volcanic eruptions that included abundant water.

 Harrison Schmitt Summary
Harrison "Jack" Schmitt (born 1935), a geologist, was the first professional scientist to walk on the moon.
Schmitt continued to be a strong advocate for the exploration and eventual settlement of space, lecturing extensively on the use of the moon as a natural resource and a source of non-polluting, non-toxic nuclear power.
Schmitt predicts that, once power generation using nuclear fusion is perfected, Helium 3 from the moon would be worth "about $3 billion a metric ton" in today's dollars, allowing a lunar colony to be profitable.

 Technology Review: Private Space
Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison Schmitt, a trained geologist, believes that there's a highly practical reason for going back to the Moon: solar wind impregnates the lunar dust with a nonradioactive isotope called helium-3, which could be useful as a fuel for large-scale nuclear fusion.
Schmitt has just published a book, Return to the Moon: Exploration, Enterprise, and Energy in the Human Settlement of Space, which recognizes that any permanent return to the Moon is unlikely in the absence of help from private enterprise.
Schmitt's futuristic scheme, of course, entails sending significant quantities of lunar dust to Earth for processing, but he calls that "a relatively small challenge" compared to developing fusion plants and lunar mining facilities.

Harrison Schmitt is, as of this date, the 12th and last human to have stepped on the Moon.
Schmitt's book acknowledges the present context but sets out in his own direction, though one some other authors have touched on, arguing that the Moon will provide a critical contribution to our civilization's energy needs, and the lunar return discussed is primarily one of industry and commerce, rather than grand national programs.
Schmitt is aligned with Fusion Technology Institute of the University of Wisconsin so he does have some insight into the progress on this technology but, let's face it: fusion has been 5 years away for the last 30 years.
