The club was first formed as Harrogate AFC at Redcar in June 1914 securing admission to the Northern League and were to play at the County ground in Harrogate.
They continued as the Hotspurs until 1948/49 when they changed their name to Harrogate Town because the title 'Hotspurs' gave no indication to other teams that they were meeting the senior club in Harrogate so the need to alter the name was apparent to all at the A.G.M that season.
Throughout the 1990's Town still remained in the, now named, UniBond League Division One and have usually finished around mid table in the League but have twice avoided the drop back into the Northern Counties East (1993/94 and 1995/96) by default being saved at the 11th hour by the demise of rival clubs.

After a sustained period of pressure Town were rewarded after 78 minutes when Martin Regan latched onto a low Hucknall clearance - scoring the goal of the season, scissor kicking from 25 yards out.
Hucknall rallied round in the last 15 minutes to try and salvage a point, but were easily kept out by Town's defence, Damien Henderson having another superb game;- again, throughout the match he was not beaten, either on the deck or in the air.

The town of Harrogate owes its early fame as a spa town to the discovery of mineral springs way back in 1571 and more recently to its horticultural shows first staged by the North of England Horticultural Society in 1923 and now held biannually.
The original club Harrogate AFC was formed in 1914 and purchased Wetherby Road in 1920 although the ground was sold to Harrogate Corporation following the winding up of the club in 1932.
After reforming as Harrogate Hotspurs in 1935, the club played at the ‘Stray’ for eleven years before returning ‘home’ in 1946, becoming Harrogate Town AFC two years later.

Mr Fotherby has already stated he wants to relocate to Claro Road, possibly with Harrogate Rugby Club, but so far he says negotiations with the Rugby Club, Harrogate Borough Council and the site’s owners Crest Homes have failed to reach a positive conclusion.
“It shows Harrogate Town’s supporters that we know there is going to be a future,” said Mr Fotherby.
