Harry Babbitt, who sang in his warm, high-baritone voice with the Kay Kyser big band on such hits as "The White Cliffs of Dover" and who voiced the laugh of Woody Woodpecker, has died.
Babbitt sang with the Kyser band from 1938 to about 1949 but also served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946.
Babbitt is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty; sons, Christopher, Michael and Stephen; a brother, Bob; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Harry Babbitt, a big band singer who once voiced the laugh of Woody Woodpecker, died on April 9 from age-related causes.
Babbitt appeared in seven movies that starred Kyser, and on the NBC quiz show, "Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge." As a solo artist, he recorded "Frosty the Snowman" and "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth," complete with a childish lisp.
Babbitt obtained the rights to the band's name and its song library from Kyser's widow and toured the country until the mid-1990s.

In 1939 the Kyser band moved to Columbia Records and in 1941 the band had two number one hits - "Lights Out 'Til Reveille" with vocals by Harry Babbitt, Ginny Sims, Max Williams, and Jack Martin on Columbia# 36137 and "White Cliffs of Dover" on #36445.
The song "Serenade of the Bells" with a Harry Babbitt vocal on #37956 charted briefly as did "Saturday Date" with Harry Babbitt and Gloria Wood doing the vocals on #38049.

When the song began, one of the lead singers (usually Harry Babbitt) sang the title phrase, and then the first verse or two of the song was performed instrumentally before the lyrics resumed.
Besides Harry Babbitt, some of the more popular members included comedic trumpet player Ish Kabibble, Ginny Simms (who had her own successful acting and singing career after leaving Kyser's band), Sully Mason, Mike Douglas (years before he became a popular TV talk show host), and Georgia Carroll.
Carroll, a blonde fashion model and actress whose best-known role was as Betsy Ross in Yankee Doodle Dandy, was dubbed "Gorgeous Georgia Carroll" when she joined the group in 1943 and within a year, she and Kyser had married.

When singer Babbitt was called to service in WWII, replacing him was Don Leslie and future talk show host Mike Douglas.
After Kyser died in 1985, singer Harry Babbitt purchased the back catalogue from Georgia, and performed under the Kyser name until the mid-1990's, one of the last touring remnants of Big Band.

This is a one sided recording CBS - "A Personal Platter" from the "Harry Babbitt Show".
After doing some research I found the Harry Babbitt Show was from the 1960s when he did a tour - I think it was his final show biz appearances since he retired in 1964.
He died in Orange County, CA at the age of 90 in 2004.

Something else rather curious- Theroux states how "By that point (in '41) Kay and Ginny were deeply in love..." Harry Babbitt personally told me that though Kay was somewhat smitten w/ Ginny, she did not feel the same, though they were often romantically linked in the press of the day.
Theroux also states that "In real life, Kyser was a painfully shy man, fearful of marital commitment".
