The war on terror represents, not merely a clash of civilizations, but a clash of fundamental ethical premises: the premise of life and the premise of death.
America was attacked, Dr. Binswanger argues, because it upholds and embodies the value of life, while its enemies scorn life and worship death.
Binswanger masterfully answers questions on a broad range of issues, including: whether parents have a legal obligation to send their children to school; the meaninglessness of the idea of human "instincts"—in sex and elsewhere; the irrationality of the "Bell Curve" approach to race and intelligence; and how to undo bad psycho-epistemological habits.

"The Big Lie: Intelligence Failure in Iraq"
Binswanger in asking “was there intelligence failure” evades the essential point: it was not a failure of intelligence that got the U.S. into Iraq, it was the dishonesty of that intelligence.
Binswanger’s final phrase “near to the heart of terrorism” is rhetorical fluff which, coupled with what has come before, is intended to smuggle the idea into your mind that Saddam was a terrorist threat to America.
Binswanger and others at ARI bring up this story again and again only shows how extraordinarily weak their case really is. They grasp at anything.

Binswanger wrote this article the tip of the iceberg of U.S. torture had come into view the previous month with the news about Abu Ghraib, featuring photos about which any decent man would have been sickened and outraged.
Binswanger leaves us to conclude that America must be in a sad state to resort to faking torture photos.

 enlightenment: BBTC, Chapter 5
According to Harry Binswanger, teleological concepts "have as their original and paradigm case the purposeful behavior of man; it is a man's knowledge of his own purposefulness that gives rise to the wider idea of teleological causation" (5).
Teleological causation (TC) in human purposeful action, according to Binswanger, is the _unproblematic_ case of TC in terms of which all other cases are to be analyzed.
Binswanger's answer is that both sorts of action have "value-significance" for their agents, and that the cause of the action in both cases is the _value_ (or anticipated value) to the agent of the goal in question.

 Memo From Two Prominent Objectivists
Harry and Peter sent letters to Leonard, which were forwarded to us by Leonard subsequent to the conference call.
For professional reasons, Edith is constrained from answering Harry's innuendo that he was on her "list" because he had stopped therapy with her, or from making any statement as to when he finally stopped therapy with her.
He then confuses himself and Harry with the Institute itself, and declares that this requires that "the Institute itself not 'turn the other cheek.'" This confusion of the Institute with their persons is shared by Harry.

In this talk, Dr. Binswanger, an associate of the late Ayn Rand, will defend her claim to have presented the first fully rational and consistent philosophy.
Binswanger argues that one’s volitional control over the operation of one’s own mind is an axiom which has to be implicitly assumed as true even by those, such as Marx, Freud, and Skinner, who attempt to deny it.
Binswanger first refutes Hume’s argument for the fact-value dichotomy, and then offers a step-by-step account of Ayn Rand’s derivation of a moral code based on one’s own life as an ultimate value.

I was very much disturbed by Harry Binswanger's defense of capitalism as I read the interview article (I did not see him speak) in Friday's Tech ["Binswanger discusses the moral basis of capitalism," March 16].
As stated in the article's summary of Binswanger's talk, he defends capitalism by saying, "Preventing a man from keeping the values that he has achieved is immoral.
I am sure that what Binswanger values more highly than his financial gains is the fact that he has worked hard and has earned what he has.

An Author Who Would Let the Whole World In - December 16, 2005 - The New York Sun
Author Harry Binswanger gave a provocative talk Monday on "The Case for Open Immigration: Why Immigration Is a Right." He said that, ideally, he would support there being the same treatment at the American border as one would have crossing the Triborough Bridge, only without the toll.
Binswanger, who formerly taught philosophy at Hunter College, spoke before members of the Objectivist Club at New York University.
Binswanger began by outlining two aspects regarding the case for free and open immigration: one moral, the other practical.

 Mars: Who Should Own It
Objectivist philosopher Harry Binswanger recently proposed this policy (without specifying a required duration of stay) and defended it on moral grounds.
But Dr. Binswanger made this defense to illustrate a more fundamental point, which is: Mars must be recognized as property-not some time in the future, but now.
Here then is Dr. Binswanger's main point: Much more important than the exact rule for initial ownership is that Mars be owned-that it be property-not some time in the future, but now-not merely as a just reward and incentive for settlement, but as a just reward and incentive for initial exploration.

Capitalists and socialists square off in Kennedy School debate
Binswanger and Ridpath defended capitalism on the basis of objectivism, the philosophy developed by novelist/philosopher Ayn Rand.
Binswanger defended this principle by appealing to the role of reason in human survival.
To live, he said, humans must produce and this requires rational thinking and action: "reason is man's means of survival." Force, he said, is anti-reason: "you must be left free to think and act on your own judgment without fear of force, jail, or fines." Thus, he concluded, freedom is the fundamental social value.

To resolve these issues, Harry Binswanger provides a unique approach combining factual and epistemological considerations.
Accordingly, to determine the proper extent of telelogical concepts, Dr. Binswanger provides an analysis of purposeful action and a point-by-point comparison of the features of purposeful action to those of vegetative and inanimate processes.
He concludes that to be essentially similar to purposeful action, a process must exhibit three features: "self-generation," "value-significance," and "goal-causation." By drawing on the principle of natural selection, he supports an exclusively biological teleology.

The Harry Binswanger List (HBL) is an email list for Objectivists, moderated by Dr. Binswanger, for discussing philosophic and cultural issues.
And while I understand their reasoning for it, I don’t think this is the best way to go about group discussions – especially when discussing philosophy –; as the dialectics of argument have a better chance of leading to truth and understanding than a monolithic echo-chamber.
So I agree with Binswanger in the notion that I (politically a libertarian) am indeed an “enemy” of Objectivism.
