Harry K. Daghlian, Jr. - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harry K. Daghlian, Jr., (1921-September 15, 1945), was a scientist who died from performing a critical mass experiment at the remote Omega Site laboratory at the Manhattan Project Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico, on August 21, 1945.
Daghlian was irradiated as a result of a criticality accident which occurred when he accidentally dropped a tungsten carbide brick onto a plutonium bomb core.
The tungsten bricks were being used as neutron reflectors, which serve to reduce the mass required for plutonium to be critical, and the accidental addition of this brick caused the reaction to go supercritical.

Soon thereafter, the Daghlian family moved to the small coastal community of New London, where young Harry received all of his primary and secondary school education, while his father worked as an X-ray technician and later became supervisor of the X-ray laboratory at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital.
As a student at Harbor Elementary School, the young Harry Daghlian played the violin in the school orchestra and seemed to be interested in everything at an early age, winning a silver cup as the most outstanding student at Harbor.
Daghlian became known as the "father" of the Physics and Astronomy Department at CC and he was a frequent speaker for local civic groups on a variety of subjects ranging from the economic depression of that time to celestial comets.

This is a highly unlikely explanation for the mechanism of blue flash phenomenon for several reasons; one of which being that if the light were emanating from the eye itself, virtually all sensation of directionality of the light would be lost and the observer would see an even blue glow everywhere.
In fact, the opposite is reported by witnesses to criticality events and the directionality of the blue flash is readily detected (such as in the case of the security officer on duty during the accident involving Harry Daghlian).
In addition, the flashes seen by the Apollo astronauts was almost always described as being white with only one event described as being "blue with a white cast, like a blue diamond" while descriptions of the blue light accompanying criticality events is practically universally described as being a "blue glow".

Daghlian's last major assignment was as an assistant in preparing the plutonium core at the MacDonald Ranch House for the Trinity test in Alamogordo, NM (16 July, 1945).
At that moment, Daghlian's large figure was standing limply with his arms suspended at his sides, attempting to rationally assess the situation in spite of a flood of varied emotions ranging from embarrassment to fear of the possible consequences he had created.
In contrast, Daghlian's total-body radiation exposure was estimated to be 480 roentgens of soft x-rays and 110 roentgens of gamma rays, with additional complications arising from the non-uniform distribution of radiation exposure, particularly to the upper body and, especially, to the hands.

Daghlian was, in fact, no mere industrial "worker" but a scientist intimately involved with the bomb project.
Daghlian worked at what was known as the Omega Site, where technicians experimented with pushing hemispheres of plutonium together, then waited for a chain reaction to begin.
On the evening of August 21, Harry Daghlian was conducting an experiment at the Omega Site when he dropped a thirteen-pound tungsten brick on top of a cabin which held a sphere of plutonium.

But Daghlian's and Slotin's plutonium sphere was in a dry air environment with no way to produce Cerenkov radiation in the lab.
In Daghlian's case, too much tamper was accidently added when the WC brick fell from his hand and the assembly became "critical".] After dinner, Daghlian attended a scientific lecture at theatre #2, and began thinking about returning to Omega Site that evening to test the third assembly, rather than the following morning as originally planned.
SED guards were stationed at Omega whenever fissionable material was onsite, in case of fire and, especially, as a deterrent to theft.

Slotin’s close colleague, Harry Daghlian, had gone to the laboratory on August 21, 1945, planning to carry out alone the assembly he had watched Slotin complete so often, even though it was against regulations for Daghlian to do this.
Upon receiving word of the accident, Slotin hurried back and was constantly at Daghlian’s side during the month in which radiation slowly killed him.
Although Slotin was looking forward to a peacetime position in the Institute of Biophysics and Radiobiology at the University of Chicago, he felt obliged to continue at Los Alamos until another scientist was trained to take his place.
