It is "fine," however, with Joe Pass and Harry Edison accenting the singer's well-honed sense of swing.
Edison's old bandmate Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis on tenor, Clark Terry on trumpet, Ray Brown on bass and the bomb-dropping Louis Bellson on drums helped keep things moving through the nine-tune set that began with "Fine and Mellow" (ah ha!) and ended with "Polka Dots and Moonbeams." What a night!
Again the title, Oscar Peterson + Harry Edison + Eddie ÔCleanhead' Vinson is somewhat misleading, for while all three (+ Pass) are on this 1986 Pablo release, the emphasis really is on Vinson, whose sophisticated alto sax work — and very wacky vocalizing — always steal the show.

Oscar Peterson & Harry Edison - Oscar Peterson & Harry Edison @ Filmbug
Sweets Edison and Oscar Peterson have a recording history that dates back to the early 50's when they were both mainstays of the Norman Granz stable - Jazz at the Philharmonic.
While both are past peak performance-wise by this mid-70's recording date, there's no real evidence of a lack of power or virtuosity and the solos on each cut are inventive and technically interesting.
The material is well-chosen, mostly standard ballads but both Edison and Peterson's background in blues-laden swing comes through loud and clear.

IF THE MJQ WERE THE "CADILLAC" OF JAZZ, AS they are dubbed by Cook and Morton in Penguin's great jazz-recordings guide, Harry Edison and Phil Woods are, respectively, the Model-T and the Thunderbird.
Built to last with a minimum of maintenance, Edison's timeless trumpet stylings were the very definition of "classic." By the same sort of metaphorical measure, Woods' luxurious alto sound gives you a great ride, but needs new shock-absorbers from time to time.
How the MJQ gets parked alongside these venerable Fords is easy to explain: it was in appearances with that group, and only with them, that Edison and Woods ever played together.
