Harry George Hawker, the second son of a Moorabbin flsmith of Cornish blood was born in a small rented terrace cottage in Wickham Rd., on January 22, 1889.
Hawker believed that in England he would soon learn to fly and the young man of scarcely 22 years of age left his native shores hoping of success in the new sphere and perhaps at the same time wondering if he was doing the right thing.

In 1914 Harry Hawker returned to Australia to demonstrate the advanced Sopwith Tabloid which he had earlier helped design.
Hawker was killed in 1921 when his aircraft crashed while practicing for an airshow.

The Hawker Hurricane MkI was part of the first production batch of 500 built by Gloster Aircraft Co. Ltd, Brockworth during 1939/140 under contract number 962371/38/C.23A/ Delivered to 504 squadron, P2725 brought down the first enemy aircraft over London on 15th September 1940, piloted by Flight Sergeant R. Holmes.
Born and raised on the Wirral Peninsula, Ray Holmes was the 55th volunteer for the RAFVR on its formation in 1936.

Following the war, after a rather unsuccessful attempt to build motorcycles, he teamed up with Harry Hawker and formed the H. Hawker Engineering Co., in the developement of military aircraft.
Next year he purchased the Armstrong Siddeley interests and established the Hawker Siddeley Group, and in 1936 started work on a monoplane fighter, which later became the famous "Hurricane," which was a great factor in winning the Battle of Britain.
William George Barker earned the Victoria Cross, Distinguished Service Order and Bar, Military Cross and two Bars, Croix de Guerre (France), two Silver Medals for Valour (Italy), and was Mentioned-In-Dispatches three times.

During the summer of 1918 Harry Hawker (Sopwith's test pilot at the time -Ed.) had a Sopwith Camel modified for his personal use.
Hawker used the resulting Sopwith Scooter for aerial demonstrations and the decision was made to modify another Camel in a similar fashion, but to equip it with full armament.
The Sopwith Swallow, as this aircraft was known, differed from the Scooter in having larger, longer wings and was intended for ship-board use.
