For every moment in which Langdon's quirky, minute gestures work their subtle spell, there are comic set-pieces that have little to do with him, that, in fact, highlight his deficiencies by placing him on turf already claimed by Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd.
Harry's belt is caught on a nail and he fusses with it, not realizing that he is in danger of plummeting to his death.
Harry Langdon deserved a lot better than he got, both from his collaborators and from posterity.

At the forefront of the Langdon revision is Floyd Bennett, president of the Harry Langdon Society.
Langdon seemed to have turned the corner, and appeared to have finally gotten a grasp on his screen character.
While Langdon may have originated his character for vaudeville skits, when it came to providing the vision for his cinematic persona it was the Sennett 'brain trust' who developed that for the movies.

Priscilla, the adorable girl next door, is enamored of Harry, and their wedding day has arrived with all of the friends, family and neighbors filling the house in the midst of this festive atmosphere.
When Langdon takes Priscilla in the woods to shoot her, this is totally a man, not a man acting as a child.
Certainly, Langdon deserves to be revered as one of the best comedians of the silent era, but, for the novice who is first being introduced to this man, it is best to start at the beginning of his career with Mack Sennett and see his films in the order they were made.

© Harry Langdon, Silent Film Comedian - goldensilents.com
Although Harry's humor was not the typical slapstick style that Sennett featured in his other films, he sensed that Harry had a unique talent all his own, and he assigned top writers and directors to work with him, including the writer Arthur Ripley, and the young directors Harry Edwards and Frank Capra.
For example, Harry's trying to stop a tornado by throwing pebbles at it in "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp" (1926), or Harry rubbing his chest with what he thinks is camphor, but which is really Limberger cheese, as he rides on a bus in "The Strong Man" (1926).
The public responded favorably and Harry enjoyed a few productive years of artistic and commercial successes to rival those of his contemporaries Chaplin, Lloyd, and Keaton.

Langdon, who was born in Council Bluffs, ran away from home when he was 13 to join a traveling medicine show, and later performed in vaudeville, burlesque and musical comedy.
Langdon reached the height of his fame in the mid-1920s, with such feature-length films as "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp," with Joan Crawford, "The Strong Man" and "Long Pants." He reportedly made $7,500 a week.
Some say Langdon's decline was brought on by his attempt to write and direct his own movies.

He quickly appeared in numerous two-reel comedies, in the course of which he developed his own screen persona: his childlike face covered by traditional pantomime white make-up, he wore a tightly buttoned jacket as though he were a boy who had outgrown it.
Langdon's enormous success fuelled his ego, and after a year or two he dispensed with Edwards and Capra and took sole responsibility for his films.
Langdon was soon fired by his film company, after which he returned to vaudeville for almost two years.

The difference between these two and Langdon, though, is that the formers' interplay with and interpretations of their comedic situations seems a lot more engaged and witty and fast-paced---they had an adult sensibility despite their man-child personae.
