Solomon and Jennie made the long trip across the Atlantic Ocean to New York, where, as was not uncommon for newcomers from foreign lands, their surname was changed as paperwork was processed.
They had five sons: Irving, born in 1891; Jacob, born in 1893; Samuel, born in 1895; Moses, born in 1898; and, finally, Jerome, who made his entry into the world Oct. 22, 1903.
Samuel and Moses were the first to become performers, followed by Jerome — although, census records indicate, he was employed as a shipping clerk as late as 1930, the year he turned 27.

The Three Stooges got their name and their start from a vaudeville act called Ted Healy and His Stooges (originally called "Ted Healy and His Southern Gentlemen"), which was founded in 1922.
Brothers Harry Moses Howard (Moe) and Samuel Howard (Shemp) (original last name Horwitz) were later joined by violinist Larry Fine (born Louis Feinberg).
