Parkes and Loch were carried off to the prison of the board of punishments at Peking, where they were separately herded with the lowest class of criminals.

 The Third China War
With the main body of the Allied force delayed in the south waiting for supplies to be brought upriver, Harry Parkes and Thomas Wade rode ahead to Dongzhou to inspect the roads and living quarters available and to negotiate preliminary arrangements for their reception and the ratification of the Treaty of Tianjin.
Harry Parkes returned to Dongzhou under a white flag of truce, escorted by a few dozen troopers of the King's Dragoon Guards and Fane's Horse Cavalry.
When Parkes and Wade returned to Zhanjiawan the next day with the Allied advance party, they were surprised to find Chinese troops busily occupying the area, building gun emplacements and stationing cavalry nearby in an obvious attempt to entrap the entire Allied force when it arrived.

Parkes returned to the Consulate and sent a strongly-worded letter to Governor-General Yeh Mingchen that reported "all the particulars of this public insult to the British flag" and accused Yeh of violating Article 9 of the 1843 Supplementary Treaty of the Bogue, which dealt with British extraterritoriality.
Parkes' belligerent position went well beyond any issue involving extraterritoriality, since the treaty provision he insisted should be applied to the lorcha dealt solely with British ships.
Parkes restated the situation as he saw it to date and repeated his demand for satisfaction for the insult to the British flag.

The largest family in the Collections, the Moraceae family, is mainly covered by the Sir Harry Parkes collection.
Parkes sent this report, along with over 400 specimens of paper and paper products, to England in 1871 where it was divided between the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Specimens included in the Parkes collection are dominated by paper made from the paper mulberry (Broussonetia), a type of paper first used in China for both ornamental and functional forms of paper, and later introduced to Japan in 610 AD.
