In 1969 the network hired Harry Reasoner away from CBS for the then outrageous fee of $205,000 a year.
The caustic, urbane Reasoner was successfully teamed with Howard K. Smith, whose conservative, just-folks approach appealed to the heartland (it was, of course, the same chemistry David Brinkley and Chet Huntley had used so successfully at NBC and seems to be the only dual anchor approach that appeals to a mass audience).
He darkened the background against which Reasoner and Walters appeared in the studio and he told Walters to dress less fussily and gave her some much-appreciated directorial guidance, such as the fact that her tendency to drop her chin at the end of each story robbed her of authority.

This is part of an essay by Harry Reasoner, written in 1962 about the death of comedian and TV pioneer Ernie Kovacs.
Reasoner was anchorman for both CBS and ABC and one of the original reporters of '60 Minutes'; his style and point of view were usually called 'wry' or 'gentle.' Critics called him 'too soft,' but this softness was, in fact, why Don Hewitt chose him to do '60 Minutes' with Mike Wallace.
I'm writing about Harry Reasoner because he contributed something to journalism that is in short supply right now; gentle wit and a reassuring tone.

Accuracy In Media - AIM Report
It was narrated by Harry Reasoner and produced by Paul Loewenwarter, the team that was responsible for the notorious hatchet job that provoked Illinois Power into producing its highly effective videotape, "60 Minutes: Our Reply." Harry Reasoner was shown visiting illegal marijuana "farms" escorted by growers wearing hats that hid their faces.
Reasoner started off with the claim that marijuana is now California's largest cash crop--more valuable than oranges, grapefruit or grapes, and after mentioning the friend-to-friend distribution system, he said: "But there are also said to be some big city dope dealers who buy up hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of sinsemilla at a time.
Reasoner observed that some of the officers who carried out this raid privately expressed "doubt whether marijuana is a public menace worth all this effort and expense." That was a doubt that 60 Minutes did nothing to dispel.
