Truman never criticized his former division commander in public or his writings, but did make it a point to have semiofficial and unofficial accounts somewhat toned down from the defend-the-honor-of-the-division rhetoric, and ensured that they were in line with eyewitness observations including those from the from the 28th Division.

Even those who most admire Harry Truman don't often argue that he was a great success as a domestic president, because Truman's presidency was from the very beginning, with only a very few brief respites, along the way an almost endless series of frustrations.
Truman stood for political order that had been painstakingly constructed and reconstructed and fought for during the New Deal and during the war and that continued in the mid and late 1940's to shape the way most Americans viewed the public world.
Truman himself commented in his diary that he considered himself at Age 49 to be a total failure, but he hung in there, ran for the Senate, won, won again in 1940 became vice-president and ultimately president.
