Harry may be one of America's forgotten motor racing heroes, even though he performed with great distinction for ten years in an era when death-shortened racing careers were almost the norm.
Harry led at the end of the first lap but was passed by the flying Ascari, who stopped at the end of lap nine, allowing Schell to resume the lead.
Harry qualified well, in fifth place, but had the misfortune to be put out on the second lap when Fangio made a rare error and spun in front of a group which included Harry.

This charismatic, immensely popular semiprofessional racer was born of a French father, prewar Delahaye racer Laury Schell, and his feisty Irish-American wife Lucy O'Reilly Schell, who won the Coupe des Dames on the Monte Carlo Rally in 1929.
Harry's mother took over the team, taking Rene Dreyfus to the Indianapolis 500 in 1940.
Harry went with the team and began racing after the end of World War II.

Harry was brought up in France, where his father ran Ecurie Bleu until his death in a car accident when his mother took over the team, taking Rene Dreyfus to Indianapolis in 1940.
Harry crashed during practice for the Silverstone International Trophy race and died.

Always offering tremendous value for money to his spectators the stories about Schell's racing pranks are legion, but he was always a fine driver and his performance at Reims in 1956 when he harried a trio of Lancia-Ferraris with his lone Vanwall signalled that Tony Vandervell's cars were really to be taken seriously.
The track was wet and Harry simply lost the Cooper on one of the circuit's many fast bends.
