Strauss would come to specialize in the history of political philosophy and refused the title of "political philosopher." In 1932 he left Germany, both to pursue his work and to escape the growing political crisis in his home country.
Strauss rejected or dismissed empirical social science and its findings in large part because he was had not been trained to employ and was therefore unable to make contributions to political science using the scientific method and statistical analysis.
For Strauss, "religion is the glue that holds society together", said Drury, who added that Irving Kristol, among other neo-conservatives, has argued that separating church and state was the biggest mistake made by the founders of the U.S. republic.

Leo Strauss was one of the few men in the modern world to understand and state clearly the problem of political obligation caused by monotheistic religion, or what Strauss referred to as the "theological-political" problem.
Strauss understood that Christianity severed the connection between law and God, and that modern philosophy's most important challenge was to find some ground of obligation upon which the law could stand, and which at the same time would not offend the piety of those who lived under the law.
Lenzner quotes Strauss on the goal of philosophy: "By uprooting authority, philosophy recognizes nature as the standard." This is silliness, or sloppiness at best, dishonesty at worst: The quotation is yanked out of context from a passage in which Strauss was describing philosophy in the ancient city.

Many Straussians, and apparently Strauss himself, believed that the existence of God and of divine justice is the nobel lie that must be maintained even though it is false.
But I suspect that among conservative intellectuals who are not directly involved in the ID movement, this may be a fairly popular reason for their advocacy of ID. And clearly, there are some voices on the right who, despite their Straussian background, reject the noble lie entirely.
