Harry Stubbs, better known to science fiction readers as Hal Clement, passed away in his sleep early in the morning on October 29th.
Harry Clement Stubbs was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on May 30, 1922 and grew up in the Boston area.
Harry Clement Stubbs published his first story, "Proof," in the June 1942 ASTOUNDING, and as of last week, was telling convention attendees that he was working on a new one after a long hiatus.

Hal Clement (Harry Clement Stubbs) was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on May 30, 1922, to Harry Clarence Stubbs and Marjorie (White) Stubbs.
His father, an accountant unable to answer young Harry's scientific questions, took him to the local (Arlington) public library; he returned with an astronomy book under one arm and Jules Verne's Trip to the Moon under the other.
Harry Stubbs died peacefully in his sleep on October 29, 2003.

Born in 1922, Clement was a high school school teacher whose fiction gained a reputation as quintessential hard SF -- science fiction firmly based on established physics, chemistry, and astronomy.
SFWA News has posted memorials, and notes that services will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Milton, Massachusetts at 10Am on Saturday, November 1.

If I hadn't been on a panel with Harry Stubbs in the late '80s, all I'd have known about him was that he wrote as Hal Clement and taught high school as his day job.
Harry, at the time I suppose Lt. Stubbs, was piloting B-24 Liberators, four-engined heavy bombers, in Europe in 1945.
Harry was co-pilot of the squadron commander's aircraft, which was in the lead.

Harry Clement Stubbs, who writes under the name Hal Clement, will be named 1998 Grand Master at the Nebula Awards™ banquet this May 1st in Pittsburgh.
Stubbs was inducted in the Science FIction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1997.
At the same ceremony, SFWA will present Nebula Awards™ for the best science fiction or fantasy novel, novella, novelette, and short story of the year; the winners are selected by vote of the active writer members of the organization.

I had seen a correction published in Sky and Telescope magazine over the name Harry Stubbs and wrote to inquire if he was the science-fiction writer.
I was afraid the Harvard authorities would take a dim view of the same name appearing in 'Sky' and in a pulp magazine, so I decided to play safe and use a pen name.
