The second aspect of Witherby's hero status was that he was a stickler for accuracy, and indeed must have been a total pain in the butt.
Harry wangled a full set of accurate colour plates for the Handbook depicting different plumage states for all the species and subspecies in there (a pioneering idea).
When Harry retired he had wanted to spend his time editing BB and tending his garden at the family home, where he was setting up a small nature reserve.

 Match 1999
Witherby who had hitherto been watchful for his 14 runs, seized the initiative, scoring 2-0-2-0-4-6 in a memorable display of attacking batting.
Witherby took 2 for 13 to check Lex's progress, but with 30 coming from the last four overs they reached 96 for 4 off their allotted 12.
Aulich and Witherby fell gallantly on their swords for an increasingly despairing victory cause and at 221 with no further rabbits in the hutch, the Evans boys reluctantly agreed to pad up and take the battling draw.

Moss takes the end of the 18th century as his starting point and identifies Gilbert White, author of The Natural History of Selborne, the artist Thomas Bewick, and George Montagu (whose name is reflected in of our rarest bird of prey, Montagu's harrier) as key figures.
Much of the real "history" of birdwatching, particularly developments in the past 40 years, has never been written down before, and these books play a crucial part in securing this oral tradition.
Both, for instance, seemed to have plumped for the same triumvirate as the key movers and shakers of the 20th century: the publisher Harry Witherby and the two Renaissance figures of British environmentalism, James Fisher and Max Nicholson.

In the Middle Ages, when a person left his European village, on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, no one knew where he really went.
If the pilgram went twenty miles down the road, to Uncle Harry's cottage and came back ten years later, no one was likely to find out.
The only way to prove that you had been to the Holy Land, was to return with a tattoo from the Coptic priests, who practiced this art, outside the city walls of Jeruselem.

In 1899, a Danish ornithologist, Christian Mortensen, had become the first person to put numbered rings on the legs of birds.
In 1909, Sir Landsborough Thomson in Scotland and Harry Witherby in England also began to ring birds, the latter's work eventually becoming the official British scheme.
Although the advent of war brought bird ringing to a temporary halt, it grew again rapidly between the two world wars, developing into the national scheme we know today.
