Harry Von Tilzer (July 8, 1872 - January 10, 1946) was a very popular United States songwriter.
Von Tilzer was born in Detroit, Michigan under the name Harry Gummbinsky (shortened to Harry Gumm before taking the name under which he became famous).
In 1902 Von Tilzer formed his own publishing company, where he was soon joined by his younger brother Albert Von Tilzer.

Von Tilzer was born July 8, 1872, in Detroit, Michigan under the name Harry Gummbinsky (shortened to Harry Gumm before taking the name under which he became famous).
He ran away and joined a traveling circus at age 14, where he took his new name, and soon proved successfull playing piano and calyope and writing new tunes and incidental music for the shows.

At the age of 14, Von Tilzer ran away from home and joined the Col Brothers Circus and by 1887, he was playing the piano, composing and acting in a traveling repertory company.
For the next five years, Von Tilzer traveled with the company and other burlesque troupes and in 1892, he moved to New York where his first job was as a saloon pianist.
Von Tilzer’s first published song was “My Old New Hampshire Home” (lyric by Andrew B. Sterling) and became a #1 hit recording in 1898.

In 1899 Von Tilzer stooped lower than ever with "The Coldest Coon in Town" and "Mammy's Kinky-Headed Coon." A more dignified approach to success was realized in 1900 with the lucrative yet lachrymose "A Bird in a Glided Cage." In 1902, Von Tilzer founded his own publishing house.
The legend of Harry Von Tilzer [+] also involves the origin of the phrase "Tin Pan Alley." Years before John Cage [+], he altered the sound of his piano by jamming bits of paper between the strings, savoring the strangely tinny tonalities.
Von Tilzer never adapted to the Jazz Age, though he gave many composers of jazz standards their first breaks.

Harry Von Tilzer was married and had two children.  He died on 10 January 1946 in New York City.
Albert's brothers Jack and Will (Wilbur) Von Tilzer were also active business associates in the firm they called the York Music Company.  The two companies were reported to have had a "friendly" rivalry; Harry’s business was the more successful of the two.  In 1903, Albert married Caddie Nusbaum.
Albert Von Tilzer died on 1 October 1956 in Los Angeles.  Some of his more popular songs were "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" (1908), "Put Your Arms Around Me Honey" (1910), and "I’ll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time" (1920).

Albert Von Tilzer was born on 29 March 1878 in Indianapolis.  Like his brother Harry, Albert worked in the family business in Indianapolis.  He sold goods with his father until he either graduated from or dropped out of high school.
Box 3 contains manuscript copies of sheet music written by Harry Von Tilzer or Albert Von Tilzer.  They are arranged alphabetically by song title.
