 Clausewitz in English: Chapter 15
Throughout his writing career, Liddell Hart was persistently and bitterly critical of Clausewitz, portraying him as the "evil genius of military thought," as the "apostle of total war," and as a relentless advocate of mass and the offensive.
As one French admirer observed, "It is odd that Liddell Hart never realized that in peace, as in war, it is usually necessary to employ the strategy of indirect approach." (3) Discredited by the events of 1940, Liddell Hart painfully rebuilt his reputation after the war.
According to Liddell Hart, obviously influenced by the ideas of the Italian air theorist Giulio Douhet, such a policy could hardly be a crime if it led to the speedy conclusion of the war and a consequent minimization of overall casualties.

Liddell Hart's views were echoed more recently by Weigley: "The first English-speaking generation to read Clausewitz got the impression that he believed victory is the only object of war, that when the guns begin firing, diplomacy abdicates to military strategy." (4)

 Military History Four Approaches
At the time of his death in 1970, Sir Basil H. Liddell Hart, the renowned British military writer, was working on an anthology on war, a "selection of great writing on military topics," which would include material from antiquity to the present.
One of these is William T. Sherman's "Letter to Major R. Sawyer, 1864," which reveals the philosophical basis for Sherman's harsh, though very effective, way of war; another is Adrian Liddell Hart's introduction, in which he expresses his own views on war and the military art.
Sir Basil's son Adrian has completed the volume, and the name Liddell Hart on the dust jacket of a hook is reason enough to peruse it.

 Jomini and Clausewitz--Their Interaction
Mahan's father, military educator Dennis Hart Mahan, is generally considered to have been a devout Jominian, and so is his son (though in fact both were creative thinkers in their own right, and calling them "Jominians" is an unfair characterization).
Mahan's own copy has been lost, but his marginal notes were transcribed into a copy donated to the Naval War College by Puleston, Mahan's biographer.
Mahan's interest is further evidenced by his marginal notes in a copy of Major Stewart Murray's 1909 condensation of On War, The Reality of War (London: Hugh Rees, 1909).
