In the first session there were technical issues with setting up the computers and connecting them to the network beyond researchers' control, which led to the undesirable situation of some students having access to the game while other were waiting to be logged onto the network.
In contrast to Hartcliffe students' use of the messageboard, there was a clear differentiation between those who were engaged in the game and motivated to discuss their performance, and those who preferred to talk about their lack of interest in the activity.
Although the former were observed to be in the majority, the situation in which the activities took place encouraged their communication to be face-to-face and so not recorded on the messageboard, while those who preferred to take less interest in the game found the messageboard better suited to their talk.
