Hartington is situated in an ancient and man made landscape, criss crossed by stone walls and patterned with trees, planted in rows, groups and plantations to provide shelter from the winds that sweep across the plateau.

Hartington Hall was originally built around 1350 for the nuns of St.Clair, but the present hall was built by Thomas Bateman in 1611 and renovated by his descendants in 1860.

The Bank of Hartington, Nebraska was founded in 1934 by Emmett William Rossiter with capital of $25,000 and a surplus of $5,000.
Emmett sold his stock in the Walthill bank, moved the Decatur charter to Hartington (1,660 population) and purchased the defunct bank building of the former First National Bank; the three previous banks in Hartington had all failed.
Edgar Hoar, past vice-president of the Bank of Hartington, who worked with Emmett from 1919, remarked that Emmett had drawn no salary from the State Bank of Decatur from the day it was founded in 1917.

HARTINGTON is a parish, consisting of four townships, namely, MIDDLE, UPPER, NETHER and TOWN QUARTERS, of which Upper Hartington includes the hamlet of BURBAGE.
Hartington Hall, now a boarding house, was built in 1611 by Hugh Bateman and is in a good state of preservation, having been restored in 1862 by the father of the present owner, F. Bateman esq.
The area of the township, with the hamlet of Burbage, is 10,311 acres, of which about one-third are common and heath, being principally on gritstone, the inclosed land being mostly on limestone; rateable value, £12,341; the population of the township of Hartington Upper Quarter in 1811 as 1,695 and in 1881, 2,174.

Hartington is a pretty little village on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border.
The village supports a number of local industries including farming, production of the famous Hartington stilton, a pottery (which is directly opposite our barn), a nuclear shelter (honest!) and a thriving summer tourist trade.
Although not as famous as its big cousin Dove Dale, Beresford Dale is just as pretty and nowhere near as crowded, and the path starts to the right of the pottery.

Hartington Hall is now a youth hostel, but is a fine example of Peakland 17th century vernacular architectural style.
In the centre of Hartington follow the road round to the left and the car park is 150 metres on the right.
For the phone box buffs, it is a K6 designed by Gilbert Scot and has all glazing bars in place (which to the rest of us means it is one of the first of that style).
