The original Hartlepool was first mentioned in AD 640 by Bede and infact the parish church of Hartlepool was named after St.Hilda who was the abbess of the nunnery at Hartlepool before moving on to Whitby.
In 1201, King John granted a charter to Hartlepool, and in 1593 a further charter to hold a market was granted by Elizabeth I. It was around 1200 that Hartlepool became part of The Bishopric of Durham.
To the south west of Hartlepool was the quiet village of Stranton with an ancient c.14th century parish church and a village green surrounded by cottages.

During the Middle Ages Hartlepool was one of the busiest ports on the east coast, but by the 18th century decline had set in and the harbour was in disrepair.
All this changed in the 1830s when a railway was built to connect Hartlepool to the collieries of the South Durham Coalfield, and work began on modern docks to handle the increased traffic which was anticipated.
But Hartlepool people are made from stern stuff, and once again the town has seen a revival, centered around the building of a vast new marina complex built on the site of the old docks.
