		The original Hartlepool was first mentioned in AD 640 by Bede and infact the parish church of Hartlepool was named after St.Hilda who was the abbess of the nunnery at Hartlepool before moving on to Whitby.
		In 1201, King John granted a charter to Hartlepool, and in 1593 a further charter to hold a market was granted by Elizabeth I. It was around 1200 that Hartlepool became part of The Bishopric of Durham.
		To the south west of Hartlepool was the quiet village of Stranton with an ancient c.14th century parish church and a village green surrounded by cottages.
