Hartsville, the seat of justice and the county’s only town, began in 1797 as Donoho’s Mill.
Charles and Sarah (Brooks) Donoho, and James and Sarah (Hamilton) Hart, and their children, were among the settlers at this place in 1797, the Donoho's on the east side of West Fork of Goose Creek, the Hart on the west side on the same stream.
The Hartsville Masonic Institute continued in operation, with a widespread clientele, as a private academy until 1910 when it became a publicly owned institution under the name Hartsville Academy.

Hartsville is the county seat of Trousdale County, Tennessee and now coextensive with it as a metropolitan government by virtue of a referendum which passed in Trousdale County by a single vote.
Hartsville is located slightly north of the Cumberland River and is approximately fifty miles northeast of Nashville.
Hartsville was the site of a proposed nuclear power plant to have been developed by the Tennessee Valley Authority, but this development was not completed despite an expenditure of over one billion dollars toward its construction.

The Battle of Hartsville was fought on December 7, 1862, in northern Tennessee at the opening of the Stones River Campaign the American Civil War.
The action at Hartsville, a crossing point on the Cumberland River about 40 miles upstream from Nashville, north of Murfreesboro, was an incident in Morgan's raid to the north, before Rosecrans had the bulk of his infantry forces on the move.
Guarding the river crossing at Hartsville was the 39th Brigade, XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland, consisting of the 106th Ohio Infantry, the 108th Ohio, the 104th Illinois, and the 2nd Indiana Cavalry.
