Remarks at the Harvard Graduate School of Design symposium "Can Design Improve Life in Cities?"
We cannot run from design, from the very best new ideas and the most exciting architects; we cannot be afraid of their ambition and vision and strangeness.
Design - by which I mean architects, landscape architects, and planners - is a partner to those of us who build buildings and neighborhoods and campuses, and we must be a good partner in return.
But we - institutional leaders and designers - have an obligation to be humble and clearsighted, to recognize that - because we are transforming a city - we must be ambitious and cautious, visionary and incremental.

Harvard University Art Museums - Press releases, 1998
The first in a series of collaborative efforts between the Harvard University Art Museums and the Graduate School of Design, this exhibition is organized by Monica Ponce de Leon, assistant professor of architecture, Jorge Silvetti, professor and chair of the department of architecture, and Brooke Hodge, director of exhibitions, Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
He designed not only the house but selected all the furnishings and decorative objects-many of which were also designed by him-and carefully planned and executed the relationship between architecture and landscape.
His work of the 1950s, perhaps his most productive period, embodies principles he pursued throughout his career in all areas of design: the development of finite form, simplified and reduced to its essential elements; lightness, transparency, and immateriality-both architecture and objects were sharpened and stripped of their visual weight.

Rodolfo Machado, Harvard GSD professor in the Practice of Architecture and Urban Design and chair of the award committee, wrote about Jáuregui's work, commenting on the distinction in Rio between the 'formal city' -- where the middle class lives, and the 'informal city' -- the favela.
While tremendous efforts must continue in these neighborhoods, Harvard is pleased to honor Jáuregui and his team for the impressive structural changes they have implemented to bring about social change.

Typically, business school candidates average 3-4 years of work experience before applying, but this is not an absolute rule for applying.

 Harvard Gazette: Making Harvard modern
Sert came to prominence in 1937 as the designer of the Spanish pavilion at the International Exposition in Paris, a project undertaken in the midst of the Spanish Civil War.
And Peabody Terrace, the housing complex for married graduate students that owes its existence to the advocacy of President Pusey's wife Anne, was designed to create a sense of community for its residents while inviting its neighbors to enjoy its public plazas and walkways.
In a sense, the controversy over Sert's designs is a controversy over modernism itself, a philosophy of art and design which has never truly won universal acclaim despite the passage of nearly a century since its first practitioners challenged prevailing 19th century styles.
