  Harvard Law
William Stuntz teaching a criminal law class at Harvard, which is planning to reduce classes in first-year courses to 80 students, from 140.
While Harvard has been a trendsetter in legal education since the 19th century, the changes reflect a need to compete with schools that offer smaller classes, more interaction with professors and greater emphasis on public service law.
Harvard already has a program to help students pay their debt, but it is for graduates in jobs related to law.

Law.com - Shift in Harvard Curriculum Reflects Larger Trend Toward Global Law
Harvard Law School's recent announcement that it is making the most sweeping changes to its first-year curriculum in 100 years heralded a major shift in legal education, including a new emphasis on global law.
Harvard decided to modify its first-year curriculum because of the "imprint" that the initial year of study has on law students, said Martha Minow, a Harvard Law School professor who spearheaded its curriculum reform project.
Harvard will accommodate the changes by reducing the number of class hours in torts, contracts, civil procedure, criminal law and property, and by adding a new January term for first-year students for the problem-solving course.

Blogging law profs assault ivory tower
As more law professors are tapping away at their computers on blogs that cover everything from the Sarbanes-Oxley Act to the death penalty, they also may be chipping away at the ivory tower.
Law professor blogging is such a hot topic that a confab of faculty members from across the country will meet at Harvard Law School in April for a two-day symposium focusing on how blogs are transforming legal scholarship.
A prevailing concern about law reviews is that law students who have just two years of course work compose the editorial staff of typical law review journals and, so goes the criticism, often make selection decisions based upon the status of the professor's school, not the value of the work.

Harvard Law to refocus the first year - The Boston Globe
The Harvard Law School faculty has voted unanimously to overhaul its first-year curriculum by focusing more on complex problem-solving, international law, and modern law-making by government bodies and administrative agencies, marking a significant departure from more than a century of traditional legal education.
The shift is a marked change from the so-called case method, which was developed at Harvard Law in the 1870s, became the basis of legal education nationwide, and remains the way most law students are taught.
The school aims to give students a more real-world approach to the study of law, Kagan said, that will benefit them no matter what career path they choose, from private practice to government service or industry.

It's unclear what impact, if any, Harvard's students had in Ropes's decision, although they are among the country's most sought-after law graduates.

Rather, as Koh at times acknowledges, [FN5] our view is that CIL should not be a source of law for courts in the United States unless the appropriate sovereign‑‑the federal political branches or the appropriate state entity‑‑ makes it so.
[FN16] General common law did not have the status of federal law, and, therefore, CIL did not trump state law and did not provide a basis for federal question jurisdiction.
Finally, these canons do not raise the same federalism concerns as the modern position because they presumably are not binding on state courts (or federal courts sitting in diversity) in their application of state law.

Though students will still have to take such standards as contracts, torts and criminal law, they’ll also be required to take a course in legislation and regulation, one of three new courses dealing with international law and a course called “Problem and Theories,” which will focus on legal problem solving.
There’s nothing wrong, or particularly novel, for that matter, with changing a law school’s curriculum to address modern practice (pretty much every major law school now has a “legal practice” course).
As useful as these “elements of law” may be once a law student practices, if they are made mandatory (and, therefore, leave fewer free semester hours and/or cut down on the number of bar-tested courses), it may make the Bar-Bre/bar cramming exercise the summer after graduation even more intense.
