		World Health Organization surveys show that that weight is on the rise all over the world, but the body mass index averages and trends in America are among the highest in the world.
		Many of the health claims about such dietary choices as abundant consumption of fruits and vegetables, and substitution in favor of unsaturated fats, and relatively frequent consumption of foods high in omega-3 fatty acids are in the category of considerable good evidence but not definitive evidence.

		Twenty percent of the total health impact occurs on 8 percent of the population that lives within 30 miles of the facilities.
		The researchers also analyzed the potential health benefits of reducing current emissions to the lower levels that would be reached by using the best available control technology required for newer power plants since the 1977 Clean Air Act and required by the US Environmental Protection Agency as retrofit on some older plants.
		The report, "Estimated Public Health Impacts of Criteria Pollutant Air Emissions from the Salem Harbor and Brayton Point Power Plants," was prepared for the Clean Air Task Force, a non-profit environmental organization focusing on air quality, with support from the Pew Charitable Trusts.

		Course Note: While intended primarily for students planning a career in occupational health, this course provides background to the subject for students studying environmental issues and is strongly recommended for students intending to take ID 263.

		A random sample of students was selected from 128 schools using probability proportionate to size sampling of colleges and universities.
		Of the 120 schools surveyed for the 2001 round, 119 met the response rate cutoff for inclusion in that year's analytic sample.

	Diabetics susceptible to compromised cardiovascular function from high levels of air pollution
		Boston, MA - Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health and colleagues assessed the effect of high air pollution levels, specifically emissions from coal-burning power plants and diesel vehicles, on Boston-area adults with diabetes.
		Beginning in the early 1990s researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health showed that particles in the air, predominantly from coal-burning power plants and traffic emissions, were associated with nearly 100,000 cardiovascular related deaths per year.
		The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes for Health, the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Pfizer Inc., the American Diabetes Association, Parke Davis Inc., the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, The William Randolph Hearst Foundation, the Iacocca Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

		Observational studies show that people who get higher than average amounts of folic acid from their diets or supplements have lower risks of colon cancer(13) and breast cancer.(14) This could be especially important for those who drink alcohol, since alcohol blocks the absorption of folic acid and inactivates circulating folate.
