Neil Young Harvest Moon Album Review -
There is nothing on "Harvest Moon" that approaches the intensity or EMOTION that comes across on the tapes taken from the solo acoustic shows.
While I feel the album is "good"...it just does not move me. In my opinion, there is not a single cut on "Harvest Moon" that does not sound better in its "original state: solo acoustic.
With its heavy country sound, "Harvest Moon" arrives just in time to (hopefully) capture a share of the market in the current country/western music fad/phase we seem to be in the midst of.

Harvest Moon (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harvest Moon is a folk-rock album by Neil Young, released in 1992.
Due to the abundance of musicians appearing on it who also appeared on his 1972 album Harvest, Harvest Moon is regarded to be a sequel to that album.
The album earned the 1994 Juno Award for album of the year.

 Harvest Moon
Neil Young's 1992 "Harvest Moon" is the followup to his most commercially successful album "Harvest" - 20 years later.
"Harvest Moon" was recorded with many of the same original musicians who appeared on "Harvest", such as Ben Keith, on pedal steel guitar, and Linda Rondstadt and James Taylor on backing vocals.
"Harvest Moon, on the other hand, is a chronicle of survival, focusing on loss and compromise and the ultimate triumphs of being a married father approaching fifty.

But the similarities were more of form than of content because, while Harvest was the statement of a confused, if earnest, 26 year old, Harvest Moon embodied the ruminations of a somewhat regretful 46 year old.

Harvest moon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.unc.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest to the autumnal equinox, which occurs (in the northern hemisphere) on or about 23 September, and in the southern hemisphere on or about 21 March.
All full moons have their own special characteristics, based primarily on the whereabouts of the ecliptic in the sky at the time of year that these moons are visible.
The full moons of September, October and November as seen from the northern hemisphere - which correspond to the full moons of March, April and May as seen from the southern hemisphere - are well known in the folklore of the sky.

 Daniel Reviews...
I think this album is better than the more acclaimed Harvest and maybe the absolute highpoint in Neil’s career together with Harvest Moon, Rust Never Sleeps and On The Beach.
As a whole, Tonight’s The Night is a good album, but it has to accept it’s role being a semi-classic, standing it’s own ground behind Neil Young’s stronger work such as After The Gold Rush, On The Beach, Harvest Moon and Rust Never Sleeps.
Harvest Moon is a wonderful example and a cornerstone in Young’s career.

After playing the Neil's new album for the first time, it quickly became obvious that I was in trouble when I saw my finger heading for the repeat button.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is, "Old King," a song about one of his old hound dogs and the shortest, most whimsical cut on the album.
Harvest Moon is Young at his best and offers a hint of what's to come over the next twenty years.

"Harvest Moon" is the logical successor to Young's early 70's breakthrough release "Harvest".
I can listen to it anytime, because it's an album that is not only pleasant to the ears, but provides a sort of message; that life doesn't have to be so fast-paced, always moving and never looking back.
This album shows that there is heart to be found in the sweetest (and sometimes the bitterest) of memories.

'Harvest Moon' is largely the latter, loping and lilting its way through love and nostalgia through all but three of the songs featured here.
Released to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Young's most popular album, "Harvest", "Harvest Moon" is not a sequel per se, but it has the same feel, and some of the musicians are even the same as in 1972.
I would recommend this album to anyone, most of the people I know who are not into all of Neil Young's stuff love this album, and when they have bought maybe a few of his albums this seems to always be there.

Touted as the sequel to 1972's Harvest, which was released exactly 20 years prior to Harvest Moon, this album is really the final installment in a brilliant trilogy of folk gems that began with After the Goldrush.
As on Comes a Time, Harvest Moon plays like a greatest hits album; each song is better than the last, and all seem spawned from a secret chamber of beauty and serenity in Neil Young's soul.
Undoubtedly an obligation for any Neil Young fan, Harvest Moon serves as a tutorial on how to write a folk song and make it stick.

 Moon Songs and Lyrics
Musicians and Songwriters have invoked the Moon's charms for ages on end, from Gregorian chants to folk songs, medieval ballads and carols to the twentieth century compositions of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Eric Clapton.
The Moon's symbology blazes on in the Moon songs this century, from the chaste and heavenly romantic themes of the earlier part of the century to the hauntings sung from the darker side of the Moon, in such later period songs as Pink Floyd's, "Lunatic," from their "Dark Side of the Moon" album.
The oldest recorded Moon song of this century and the most popularized of all Moon songs is "Shine On Harvest Moon," written in 1903 by Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth.

Sure, Harvest contained a track that hinted at Young as the godfather of grunge (“Alabama”), but Young’s grunge was always produced to highlight the clarity of his lyrics (see also “Cinnamon Girl” and “Out of the Blue”) in a way that the Seattle productions of the early nineties was not.

When I lived in Denver in the time this album was being recorded, I knew a barmaid in a low-limit casino in the mountains who, as far as I knew, was the most beautiful woman on earth at the time.

On this No. 1 1972 album, even the singer's acquired-taste voice comes across smooth and beautiful--the smash "Heart of Gold," with steel guitars and Linda Ronstadt's backup vocals, is by far Young's most commercial-sounding song.
I certainly recommend the album to Neil fans and think that non-Neil fans may find it to be their favorite of his albums.
I positivley love this album, so don't be discouraged by the fact that I don't consider it among the handful of his best, it's just that the man has come out with such stellar albums, that one as great as this, falls out of the top 5 or so.

But that's not what elevates this album: it's his pure, naked, visceral reaction to the Bush administration's foreign policy, building on a canon of outrage that he began with 1970's "Ohio," penned in the wake of the Kent State student deaths.
On this album, Neil Young makes his feelings about these issues painfully clear, he is clearly against the war, and his outspokenness on the subject should endear him to the left wing/anti-war movement everywhere.
If the album were acoustic and the songs written and played and arranged more along the lines of his most recent albums which are fantastic in everyway, then this album might be excellent but its only interesting and mildly exciting for my taste.

One of the misnomers about Neil Young is that "Harvest" is one of his best albums, when in fact despite some great songs it is wildly uneven.
The sequel "Harvest Moon," while lacking a song as good as "The Needle and the Damage Done" has no such problems.
