Harvest Moon is one of my favorite game series, I started off playing this series with the Nintendo 64 version which was Harvest Moon 64, and then I played the PS, PS2, GC and a bit of the SNES version even though I like this game quite a bit it does get somewhat repetitive.
The one thing that made this game one of my favorite’s series is that when you set down the controller from playing this game it doesn’t feel like some other game, when I was playing this game I never found myself thinking like “This seems like some other game I played”.
This game is rather surprisingly addictive and is a good game for all ages, though like a said a fair bit of time it can get repetitive.

In this placid but fun game, players take on the role of a rather simple farm boy, and their goal is to raise a family and build a farm—in short, help him to have a "wonderful life".
Besides structuring the game by marrying and raising a child, there are plenty of matters to tend to: milking cows, shearing sheep, and hatching chicks are some of the elements of farm life in Harvest Moon.
This game is decidedly social—there are plenty of characters to meet (including a mad scientist, a hobo, an archaeologist, a rich old woman, a butler, a metallurgist, and more), and friendships built contribute to the success of the boy's (and his son's) life.

Harvest Moon type game - GameDev.Net Discussion Forums
The game got a bit dull once you had a good set of tools, a good spread of livestock, and were just farming for weeks on end.
So, if you are making a Harvest Moon type game, it would really help if you added something like a farmhand to help out or let the wife help in some way.
Or something, I mean, in Harvest Moon, I found it really fun to get the farm cleaned up and start producing, but I couldn't get a really big farm going because it's so darn boring doing the same old chores every day that writing code for the farmhand would at least be mentally challenging.

As mentioned, farming is the main focus of the gameplay, expressed with all the bright and cheery panache that is typical of Japanese simulation games.
Although I certainly think the games works and I admit to enjoying it much, my suspicions are that it suffers slightly from trying to impose the story-driven nature of a narrative RPG onto what has traditionally been nothing more than a game designed to allow you to build up your farm.
Although the game does show symptoms of spreading itself too thin by trying to appeal to two audiences, it manages to achieve an absorbing and worth-while balance all its own.

The first bit of the game will basically revolve around repairing the farm by re-tilling the soil, replanting the crops, and massively renovating the decrepit shack you have to live in.
