On the outside the film is a light hearted comedy but when looking at it closely it is very clearly a serious social commentary of it's time, and indeed of the present time (for the same prejudices still exist today).
Harvey is a "pooka" (a mischievous spirit) that manifests itself as a six foot white rabbit.
Only Elwood P. Dowd can see Harvey and it is from this that the underlying dark story of an alcoholic's friendship with an invisible spirit blends itself in to comic fantasy.

Of course the movie is dated and implausible today in several respects; however it still holds a gentle, childlike appeal that transcends time.
Harvey is my number one favorite movie of all time.
Like other examples of the genre, HARVEY revolves around a harmless bumbler whom society considers a lunatic (Elwood P. Dowd); at movie's end, we are left with the impression that all mankind are mad and those in the sanitarium are no more lunatic than those outside.

The epigraph for James Harvey’s Movie Love in the Fifties is an excerpt from a 1998 conversation with the movie critic Pauline Kael that ends with the interviewer claiming, " When I’m at the movies, I feel like I’m swept up, lost, " and Kael, inimitably, replying, " I feel as if I’m found.
It’s not even about movie love in the ’50s, really, since roughly one-third of the space is given to lengthy descriptions of films released in the ’40s.
Harvey’s preferred methodology (which served him well in Romantic Comedy) is to move through a film, recounting scenes in detail, often assuming a slightly skewed perspective to illuminate its inner workings.

A brief scene consisting of the toon Baby Herman giving a sexual gesture to a female (human) extra on the set of the opening cartoon was edited out of the DVD edition of the movie, though it can be found on earlier editions of the VHS and laserdisc issues.
However the stage version of Harvey came out in 1944, to which, logically, Angelo must be referring to, although whether the writers intended this is unclear.

But nobody else has ever seen Harvey, so Elwood is a source of humour in the community and shame for Elwood’s sister, Veta Louise Simmons (Josephine Hull is hilarious in the role) and her daughter, Myrtle Mae (Victoria Horne), who share the family home with Elwood — and Harvey.
What makes Harvey great is the fact that it’s equally enjoyable as a piece of comedic fluff and as slyly intelligent social commentary aimed squarely at people who try to enforce conformity, judge those who are different, and define what’s sane behaviour and what isn’t.
Regardless of whether or not we ‘believe’ in Harvey, and regardless of whether or not we choose to watch the movie for its good-natured low-key humour or for its smart social commentary, this is a fine film.
