Harvey Mandel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harvey Mandel moved to the Bay Area, regularly performing at the infamous club "The Matrix", where local favorites like Jerry Garcia, Elvin Bishop and Jefferson Airplane would sit in and jam.
Mandel was one of the first rock guitarists to utilize this technique, years before Eddie Van Halen and Stanley Jordan came along.
One of Mandel's most significant session credits was his participation on Black and Blue, the 1976 LP from The Rolling Stones.

Then the news arrived that Harvey Mandel had replaced Henry Vestine as lead guitarist of the legendary Californian R and B band Canned Heat, and it was clear that his talents had been noticed by more than just a few musicians.
Harvey was in their dressing room at the Fillmore on the night that Henry Vestine quit the band.
Harvey Mandel returned to the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco on January 26, 1996 on a bill with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Jorma Kaukonen of The Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna.

Mandel got his first toehold in the fertile Chicago white blues-rock scene of the mid-'60s (which cultivated talents like Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, and Steve Miller), and made his first recordings as the lead guitarist for harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite.
Enticed to go solo by Blue Cheer producer Abe Kesh, Harvey cut a couple of nearly wholly instrumental albums for Phillips in the late '60s that were underground FM radio favorites, establishing him as one of the most versatile young American guitar lions.
Mandel unwisely decided to use a vocalist for his third and least successful Philips album.

Blues show brings '60s back to life
Guitarists Harvey Mandel and Mike Bloomfield, harmonica player Paul Butterfield and singer-guitarist Nick Gravenites were among the young Turks venturing into nightclubs that largely catered to Blacks so they could jam with their idols.
Four decades after breaking ground with their rock-flavored take on the blues, Mandel, Gravenites and other veterans of the scene are performing as the Chicago Blues Reunion, hoping to pass on their music to yet another generation.
Mandel, who became a Chicago guitar mainstay and later performed at Woodstock with Canned Heat and with Britain's John Mayall, learned his craft while still a teen.

It is hard to believe that Harvey Mandel's instrumental albums with the exception of the first album were not better sellers at the time they were released.
Mandel plays a LOT of guitar on this disk - and he;s real good - sure he sometimes repeats himself and isn't necessarily "fluid" but its got some fire behind it.

Harvey Mandel's credits include Canned Heat, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, The Ventures, and The Rolling Stones ("Black and Blue" album); Freddie Roulette, often called "the greatest lap steel guitarist in the world", has blended his ethereal sound with those of John Lee Hooker, Earl Hooker, and Charlie Musselwhite.
Appearing on every track is the San Francisco Bay Area band NightFire, which, in addition to Harvey Mandel and Freddie Roulette, includes veteran musicians Michael Borbridge on drums, Eugene Huggins on harmonica and vocals, and Michael Warren (formerly with Merl Saunders and The Rainforest Band) on bass.
Harvey Mandel is known to most who idolize that relatively small league of "guitar players' guitar players." His jazz-informed blues-rock has been tagged "psychedelic" in some circles, but a more apt description of Mandel might be "musical explorer," as evidenced by his imaginative body of work.

 Blogcritics.org: Harvey Mandel's Baby Batter - A Forgotten Classic
The opening title cut starts with a long lead organ solo, with Mandel slowly ramping up the rhythm guitar bursts until he soars into the fray with an extended lead guitar solo that is at once syncopated and oddly rhythmic.
Mandel recorded a blazing version of this cut as Midnight Sun 2 on his 1973 album Shangrenade.

Perhaps Mandel’s best known gig remains as the lead guitarist with Canned Heat, even playing with the group at their fabled ‘69 gig at Woodstock.
According to Mandel, "I learned from the blues players I was jamming with, as far as the technique and the notes, but I always had my own sound in my head." It’s been quite a while since Harvey released his debut solo album Cristo Rendentor back in 1968.

Mandel's debut remains his best early work, introducing an accomplished blues-rock guitarist capable of producing smooth, fluid lines and a variety of tasteful distortion and buzzing via an assortment of tone pedals and customized amplifiers.
Harvey's workout on Nat Adderley's "Jazz Samba" is probably his best solo performance, and an obvious touchstone for the Latin-rock hybrid of Carlos Santana (whose own debut came out the same year); on the other side of the coin, "Boo-Bee-Doo" is one of his sharpest and snazziest straight blues-rockers.
Mandel, a music innovator, was attracted to Clarity's recording process, which gave him the artistic freedom to explore each musical composition in a fresh and unique way.
