Harvey Milk High School is a high school for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) students located in the East Village of New York City, and named after Harvey Milk, the first openly gay city supervisor of San Francisco, California, who was assassinated in 1978.
The school was founded in 1985 as a small, a two-room program with just over a dozen students by HMI in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education's Career Education Center.
Harvey Milk was created as an alternative education program for youth who find it difficult or impossible to attend their home schools due to threats, violence, or harassment.

I made this much clear to Geoff as he proceeded with his argument that the school is doing a world of good for these displaced youngsters, many of whom have been bouncing around the streets of New York after being kicked out of their parents' houses.
I do not deny that Harvey Milk offers a safe environment for these kids to explore their individuality without fear of reprisal or violence, helping to build up their sense of self-worth and confidence.
I can certainly understand the anti-segregationist argument, but there's more to life than school and these kids will still be living in the real world for their whole school career whether they like it or not.

Harvey Milk ’s stand on gay rights was that everyone should come out–and tell people that not all gays are transvesties and child molesters.
It’s not exactly a ’school for gays.’; I think it would be more accurately called a ’school for troubled gays’ or ‘for gays in difficult situations.’ Generally, the students are those who’ve been thrown out on the street for being GLBT, repeatedly harassed (in extreme ways) by former schoolmates, or worse.
The school is not to reform people, it is to allow them to be themselvs where they will feel most comfortable, with others most similar to them.

Last month, three Harvey Milk students were charged with gang assault after a group of teens stabbed a man in the back with a screwdriver in the parking lot of a Starbucks coffee shop across the street from the school.
How ironic that a school that was supposedly established to shelter gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (meaning transsexual or transvestite) teens has become the home of what appears to be a growing crime syndicate.
When news broke this summer that Harvey Milk would become the first public school of its kind, Principal William Salzman said, “This school will be a model for the country and possibly the world.” If the early results are any indication, let’s hope not.
