Sacks' proposals for a Membership Categorization Analysis (MCA) were mostly focussed on the ways in which procedures of 'membership categorization' could be seen to be inherent in members' talk to suggest obvious implications of what they were saying.

Sacks (with Emmanuel Schegloff and Gail Jefferson) is one of the most influential person in the theoretical developments in the past 25 years.
Sacks has shown that the most ordinary, repetitive of events involve specific constructive work by all those involved: doing nothing is hard work by all concerned within a particular field where protagonists joust to produce a common task.

Conversation Analysis | Encyclopedia of Sociology
Sacks was a University of California sociologist who had studied with Harold Garfinkel, the founder of the ethnomethodological movement, as well as with Erving Goffman.
Sacks, like Garfinkel, was preoccupied with discovering the methods or procedures by which humans coordinate and organize their activities, and thus with the procedures of practical, common-sense reasoning in and through which "social order" is locally constituted (Garfinkel [1967] 1984).
In short, Sacks came to recognize that the talk itself was the action.

Harvey would put the game out of reach with less than two minutes left in the first half.
Putting together a season like Harvey has-11 sacks and 35 tackles-and having perhaps his best performance on college football's biggest stage, Harvey may now face the same decision Thomas had to make-stay for his senior season, or opt for the NFL.
Having the fourth-highest single-season sack total in UF history might be hard to top, too, and there's no guarantee he avoids injury next year.

Harvey Sacks founded Conversation Analysis in the mid 1960’s, as a means to investigate social order as it is revealed in everyday conversation.
Sacks believed that there is “Order at all points.” Anywhere we look at human activity, we will find evidence of social order.
Sacks did not believe in the existing methodologies for linguistics or sociology, and his principles demonstrate this divergence.

Schegloff (1972) produced the direct precursor to the work on 'locatings' that I am going to investigate wherein he collected forms of analysis which speakers use to accomplish the timing and spacing of events through everyday language.
In his work he termed these analyses 'locational formulations' (p79) and was building on earlier work by Harvey Sacks on membership categories(Sacks 1972a) which related to the identification of persons by the use of membership categorisations.
In conversation analysis the work of categorising is an ongoing activity which can be made visible in strips of transcribed talk, though in the earlier work of Sacks the work of categorising is not restricted to talk.

From its beginnings with Harvey SACKS' (in)famous lectures in the late 1960s (posthumously published as SACKS, 1992a, 1992b), conversation analysis (CA) has developed into a mature discipline, one of the major methods of analyzing day-to-day verbal interactions, used in a variety of disciplines such as communications, education, anthropology, and sociology.
I became particularly fond of conversation analysis as a way of understanding the everyday world surrounding me, particularly how the social structures that others use to explain human conduct are actually instantiated in situated (inter)action.

It ought, then, in every respect, to be the envy of the social sciences generally and not easily dismissed as an abstruse and recondite branch of language studies or “discourse analysis” concerned with merely trivial fragments of recorded talk as such.
There we find innumerable appeals to the now well-recognized fact that the practical actions of everyday talk have significant, culture-wide, formal structures that are the proper objects of the discipline.
Or, in Sacks’s own terms, seemingly insignificant mundane events are generated by a powerful (if not always intuitively accessible) social “machinery.” The purpose of this paper is, then, to extract a sample of these aspects of Sacks’s Aspects in order to illustrate, sketch, or give a preliminary sense of just that point.

This narrow approach was replaced by the investigation of TURN-TAKING, in which a discourse action and reaction are seen as constituents of a “speech exchange system” (Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson 1974: 696).
Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson (1974) distinguish two groups of conventions: (1) the current speaker selects the next one, for instance, by direct address; and (2) the next speaker “self-selects” by beginning to speak at an available utterance boundary.

 Conversation analysis
Conversation analysis has evolved over several decades as a distinct varient of ethnomedology.
While not an ethnomethodologist, Goffman's proposal that face-to-face interaction could be an analytically independent domain of inquiry certainly helped inspire Sack's work.
Two other key figures whose writings (separately and together with Sacks) contributed to the emergence of conversation analysis were Gail Jefferson, one of Sack's first students, and Emanuel A. Schegloff, another sociologist trained in the University of California system who was decisivly influenced by Garfinkel and, in much the same manner as Sacks, by Goffman.
