  Hasapiko
The Hasapiko was called Makellarion Horon (makellarios is the Greek word for "butcher") during Byzantine days because it was adopted by the butchers' guild in Constantinople (now İstanbul, Turkey).
The dance is mostly known outside of Greece because of its being danced during the Syrtaki in the film Alexis Zorbas (titled Zorba the Greek in America).
The Hasapiko is sometimes referred to as Hasaposerviko, whose basic step is based on that of the fast Hasapiko.

Three variations of the traditional hasapiko were danced on the coasts of Asia Minor, the islands of the eastern Aegean and in N. Greece, in various tempos.
As the bouzouki and the baglamas became increasingly popular, it evolved into something quite different, a modern standardized choreography, danced all over the country, mistakenly considered by tourists to be the typical Greek dance.
Its metre is 2/4 or, according to others, 4/4 and today is danced slowly, at a medium pace or quickly.

Hasapiko comes from the word "hasapis," meaning butcher.
Vari Hasapiko developed in the cities and tavernas of Greece during the 20th century, unlike most other Greek dances, which we associate with the past and outdoor village life.
The dance is also known as Argo (slow) Hasapiko, Naftiko (sailor's) Hasapiko, Peiraiotiko (from Peiraius, the seaport of Athens), Ploioritikos (stevedore's dance), and Koulouriotiko (dance from Koulouri, a fishing village on the island of Salamis).
