Hascosay Sound, (HU542925), is a stretch of water on the east side of the island of Yell in Shetland, between the Ness of Kaywick and the uninhabited island of Hascosay.
At the south end of the sound is the entrance to Mid Yell Voe.

  HAMNAVOE DRY-DOCK SCHEDULE CONFIRMED
Hascosay, which recently underwent a comprehensive overhaul and re-fit, will operate a car, freight and limited passenger service on the existing Hamnavoe schedule.
Utilising the Hascosay is a viable option that gives us the capacity to carry all cars and freight presented, whilst making alternative arrangements for passengers if required.
Due to Hascosay’s limited passenger capacity – which NorthLink is currently in discussions with the Maritime Coastguard Agency to increase – NorthLink has made arrangements to work with John o’ Groats Ferries for the duration of Hamnavoe’s dry-docking to carry passengers between Orkney and the Scottish mainland.

During July I went over to Shetland for a few surveys on the Hascosay, a ferryboat belonging to North-Link sailing from Aberdeen to Lerwick.
At this time of year its amazing, on our last trip I saw 11 minke whales, 15 harbour porpoise, 79 white-beaked dolphins and 50-60 atlantic white sided dolphins - all very close to the boat.

I decided that it would be nice to be an activator for a change and suggested to Jack, already an activator, that we could do some of the Shetland Islands together.
We could not raise much interest on the WAB 40 metre net so we QSY’d to 20 metres until it was time to set off for Hascosay.
Although Hascosay is a very short distance from Fetlar the boat to take us there was on Yell so we had to catch the 11 o'clock ferry to Yell.

There are still 2 Pomarine Skuas in the Bluemull triangle, off Hascosay.
A boat survey found 3 Pomarine Skuas, off Lunna, Hascosay and north Fetlar, while a Velvet Scoter was off Hascosay and 2 Common Scoters were off Fetlar.
There were 3 Puffins and 5 Little Auks between SE Yell and Lunna Ness.

The announcement, made on Friday morning, means that all four of the NorthLink vessels, which will come into action in October 2002, have now been named.
The passenger ferry for the Aberdeen - Kirkwall - Lerwick route is to be called Hrossey - the Old Norse name for the Orkney Mainland - while the livestock vessel being bought in by the company will go by the name of Hascosay - an island in Shetland between Yell and Fetlar.
These join Hamnavoe, the name for the new Stromness-Scrabster ferry.

A channel separating the west coast of the island of Hascosay from the much larger island of Yell in Shetland, Hascosay Sound averages a half-mile (1 km) in width.
The Hascosay Sound meets the South Sound at the mouth of Mid Yell Voe, and extends northwards to the mouth of Busta Voe.
